Bad mood? Run for 10 minutes!

2022-05-23

People's emotions always fluctuate, and there are many ways to improve their emotions. A recent study found that 10 minutes of moderate intensity running can effectively improve people's low mood and make them feel less bad. Many people may feel that long-distance running can help improve their mood, but a recent article published in the journal scientific report points out that 10 minutes of moderate intensity running can have enough impact on the brain to improve executive function and emotion management. The researchers called 26 healthy people and asked them to take two tests, one for a 10 minute run with 50% maximum oxygen uptake on the treadmill and the other for a rest within a specified time to calm their emotions. The researchers used professional tools to monitor their brain executive function and emotional management, before and after running and before and after rest. Hideaki soya, a professor of neuroendocrinology at the University of Tsukuba in Japan and the lead author of the study, said the results showed that running had obvious effects in promoting executive function and emotional management. This may be related to an area of the brain called the bilateral prefrontal cortex, which plays an important role in executive function and emotion management. Running can stimulate this area and may lead to changes in neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, acetylcholine and dopamine. Previous studies have confirmed that these substances can affect executive function and emotion management. Although any other form of exercise may have a similar impact, running has its own uniqueness. Professor Hideaki soya said: "considering that running is a systemic forward movement, it requires more coordination and balance control. Moreover, even if you don't run often or never run before, 10 minutes of running has the same effect on mood improvement." So when you feel your mood is not high again, you can go out and run for 10 minutes, which may soon make you feel better. (Xinhua News Agency)
