Representative of China: China is firmly opposed to NATO provoking camp confrontation around the world

2022-05-06

The UN Security Council held a meeting on Ukraine on the 5th. At the meeting, Zhang Jun, permanent representative of China to the United Nations, called on the international community to increase efforts to promote a ceasefire and end the war and minimize the humanitarian impact caused by the conflict, and pointed out that the lessons of the Ukrainian crisis were profound and worthy of serious reflection. Zhang Jun pointed out that NATO's repeated eastward expansion after the cold war not only did not make Europe safer, but also planted the seeds of conflict. NATO claimed to be a defensive organization, but wantonly launched war against sovereign countries, causing huge casualties and humanitarian disasters. Zhang Jun said that the day after tomorrow is May 7. On May 7, 1999, NATO bombed the Chinese Embassy in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, killing three Chinese journalists and wounding more than 20 Chinese diplomats. The Chinese people will never forget this barbaric atrocity and will never allow such a history to repeat itself. Zhang Jun stressed that the security of all countries is indivisible. It is unreasonable to base one country's security on the insecurity of other countries, and it will not work in reality. The cold war has long ended, and NATO should assess the situation and make necessary adjustments. Adhering to outdated security concepts and keen to provoke camp confrontation and create tension in Europe, even in the Asia Pacific and around the world, China is firmly opposed to this practice, which is neither harmful to others nor beneficial to itself. Zhang Jun said that the world does not need a "new cold war", and the world cannot afford greater turbulence and division. China solemnly advocates that in order to solve the practical problems of human security and seek a long-term way to world peace, all countries should reaffirm their commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, earnestly uphold the principle of indivisibility of security, and build a balanced, effective and sustainable global and regional security architecture through consultation and concerted efforts.
