The scientific research team successfully reached the summit, and the gradient meteorological observation system in China's Everest region has been preliminarily completed

At noon on May 4, 12 members of the first echelon of the second Qinghai Tibet scientific expedition "peak mission" Everest scientific expedition successfully climbed to the top, and an automatic weather station with the highest altitude in the world was set up 8830 meters from Everest. The Qinghai Tibet Plateau is the third pole of the earth, the water tower of Asia and the giant regulator of monsoon and westerly wind, which has an important impact on global climate change. Everest is the symbol of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, and its scientific research has also become an important part of the second Qinghai Tibet scientific research. Yao Tandong, leader of the second Qinghai Tibet scientific expedition, on-site commander in chief and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the science and Technology Daily that after the erection of the meteorological station, eight meteorological gradient observation stations in the Everest region from 5200 meters to 8830 meters above sea level will be formed to provide precious first-hand data for observing the climate and environmental changes in the Everest region. Yao Tandong introduced that this scientific research is the first comprehensive scientific investigation and Research on the top of Everest in the world. In addition to setting up the weather station, the expedition team also completed the summit expedition tasks of using high-precision radar to measure the thickness of ice and snow, collect ice and snow samples, and collect the atmosphere above the top of Everest. "The new understanding and breakthrough we have made in carrying out comprehensive scientific research on the top of Everest for the first time are our contribution to science, the people, the country and the world." Yao Tandong said. It is understood that China has carried out more than six scientific research activities on Mount Everest since the 1950s. In the past, due to the limited conditions, for such a landmark site as Everest, scientists mostly did research at an altitude of 56 kilometers, and there were many gaps in the research above 8000 meters. With global warming, how will the Everest region respond? Will the snow and ice on the summit melt? What changes have taken place in the ecosystem from the foot of the mountain to the peak? What are the changes of greenhouse gases and air pollutants such as carbon dioxide? A series of problems need scientific observation. The "peak mission" Everest scientific research was fully launched on April 28 this year, with a total of 5 scientific research teams, 16 scientific research teams and more than 270 scientific research team members participating. This is a comprehensive scientific examination with the widest coverage of disciplines, the largest number of participants and the most advanced instruments and equipment since the launch of the second Qinghai Tibet scientific examination in 2017. It can be called a feat of human beings to carry out high-altitude comprehensive scientific investigation and research in the Everest region. (Xinhua News Agency)
