This generation of young people, while shouting "lie flat" while working hard

2022-04-28

On April 27, the communication and national governance research center of Fudan Development Research Institute, Shanghai Information Security and social management innovation laboratory and BiliBili Public Policy Research Institute jointly released the survey report on the social mentality of Chinese young Internet users (2009-2021). In this survey, 4556 active young netizens from different regions, ages and educational levels born from 1990 to 2005 were selected as research samples through stratified sampling on social media. Nearly ten million blogs published from 2009 to 2021 throughout their e-life cycle were crawled to carry out big data analysis based on supervised machine learning (SVM). Some of the conclusions reached in this report are different from everyone's impression. First of all, young netizens generally hold a very positive willingness to struggle and have an obvious abandonment attitude towards "lying flat doctrine". It can be said that contemporary youth call "lying flat" in the name of "struggling"; The motivation behind their refusal to lie flat and support struggle is that they generally believe that "efforts are useful" and have high expectations of social mobility. The data show that up to 75.0% of the youth samples express a positive struggle orientation, urge themselves to make continuous efforts and oppose "lying flat"; Only a very small number of youth samples support "lying flat"; Another 21.3% of young people have expressed both struggle intention and "lying flat" intention with similar frequency, which belongs to mixed attitude preference. And with the passage of time, the "struggle" tendency of young Internet users has become stronger. The proportion against "lying flat" increased from 45.0% in 2010-2016 to 74.1% in 2017-2021. Secondly, young netizens yearn for economic independence and are unwilling to be "neets". Some young netizens are dissatisfied with income distribution and look forward to the improvement of social distribution. The data show that among all the subjects studied, 67.6% of the young netizens opposed to "gnawing the old" and 69.1% of the young netizens agreed to early economic independence. By comparing the employment view data of young Internet users between 2010-2016 and 2017-2021, it can be found that with the growth of age, young Internet users prefer to get rid of their economic dependence on their parents. The proportion of those opposed to "gnawing the old" increased from 32.5% to 52.9%, and 35.1% changed from unexpressed to opposed to "gnawing the old". Some of the data in the report also support the public's past impression. For example, in terms of employment outlook, the survey shows that young netizens tend to have a positive attitude towards work outside the system, but in the employment choice, the proportion of work inside the system is higher; The post-90s are more inclined to work within the system than the post-90s; The attractiveness of first tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen to young netizens is still on the rise. In the view of love and marriage, young people still show a positive and eager attitude on love and marriage issues, but there is an obvious gap between their willingness to marry and love, and the situation of non marriage and late marriage is gradually rising. How to treat such an unexpected and reasonable investigation report? The author believes that the rich generation has shaped the individualization of contemporary youth groups characterized by self commitment to life opportunities and amplification of self-worth, and pursue freedom, comfort and sense of achievement beyond food and clothing. Shouting "lie flat" is just a gesture to get rid of the shackles of external responsibilities. Such "duplicity" is not rare and not difficult to understand. The practice of requiring the outside world to provide a more relaxed environment and reduce the expectations of elders will actually appear among the youth of any era. Only the contemporary youth have more courage to express it. As mentioned in the report, although the "lie flat" speech is rampant on the Internet, it is more an emotional expression of contemporary youth than an internal belief that is really determined to practice. Contemporary youth still play a role in advocating the work ethics of struggle. It is generally believed that "efforts are useful" (accounting for 73.2% of the total), and has a high sense of development efficacy (accounting for 62.8% of the total), reflecting the confidence of young netizens in their own development and their vision for the future. However, in addition to seeking a sense of stability within the system, contemporary youth will also find spiritual satisfaction and value sources from the circle based on personal values and interests, which is the reason for the frequent occurrence of slash youth. Of course, we also see that the growth of contemporary youth is accompanied not only by China's reform and opening up, rapid economic growth, large-scale expansion of higher education and the popularity of the Internet and social media, but also by the reality of increasing social differentiation and increasingly rigid social strata. In the face of an established social pattern, it seems difficult to change the current situation. This is the same subject faced by every generation of young people. It is only that pessimists want to lie flat and optimists will struggle actively. What we need to do is to try our best to understand and sympathize with them and create conditions for them to stimulate their personal initiative in the future society. After all, the future belongs to the young people of the present. (Xinhua News Agency)
