In the Internet age, why has focus become a "scarce product"

2022-04-19

A 2022 national focus insight report shows that the continuous focus time of contemporary people has decreased from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds. The data of the fourth World Internet Conference also shows that a person faces the screen at least 150 times a day, and looks at his mobile phone every 6.5 minutes on average. It must be acknowledged that in the Internet age, focus is becoming more and more like a "scarce product". People's time and attention are constantly cut, and maintaining long-term focus has become a very rare quality. But when you think about it, it's not so strange. Turn on computers and mobile phones, microblogging, wechat, short videos, portals, search engines... Too many things can take our attention. Just scratching around on the screen with your fingers may take up most of our time. However, some people say that distraction must not be a good thing? Does this also mean that our channels of learning and obtaining information are becoming more and more diverse and rich? We see more things, can't we gain more? A survey of 1007 respondents conducted by the social survey center of China Youth Daily in 2020 through its website shows that young people have a variety of learning ways at present. Watching teaching videos (48.5%) is the most used way by respondents, followed by reading books (47.0%). Respondents also made extensive use of platforms and tools for learning, such as search engine (39.5%), wechat microblog and other online social platforms (39.2%), short video (39.1%), post bar and interest community (31.9%). Although there are many ways to learn, there are still essential differences between skimming browsing and dedicated reading and learning. Just because we stay on every project and page for a short time, we often rush to the next destination before we have time to build a really important meaning. This is an important reason why we seem to see a lot of things every day, but we don't have much feeling in retrospect. It is also viewed through both eyes, but the effect will be very different with different objects and methods. Whether it's wechat, microblog or short videos on the Internet, what catches people's attention is often not the content and thoughts, but the sensory stimulation and entertainment value embodied in them. The pictures people see switch quickly, but there is little space left for thinking. The traditional way of thinking of "hiding the paper and thinking long" is not easy to realize in the context of visual reading. More importantly, no matter what we think, what is passed from the large and small screens can only be passively accepted by us. The real reading and learning should be free and independent. We can analyze and understand the received content, so as to establish a qualitative dialogue relationship. Nowadays, although we are immersed in a large amount of information every day, we lack active trade-offs and filtering. This can also explain why our attention is difficult to concentrate. Because we are always busy being led by all kinds of information, so we lose ourselves unconsciously. Our attention is short, but we don't feel relaxed; We are exposed to a lot of information, but we don't feel full. This is more like the washing of information than chewing. Therefore, we should emphasize the importance of focus. When we concentrate on one thing, we have the possibility of "self-care" and the way of "self-improvement". It is impossible to establish the ability of reading on the basis of self-consciousness and self-study. It only exists in our focused soul and thought, which requires us to focus on finding and exploring. (Xinhua News Agency)
