Children's food should not be the "concept card" played by businesses

2022-04-19

Children's soy sauce, children's noodles, children's dumplings... In recent years, there are more and more kinds of children's food on the market. As long as the same brand is stained with the word "children", the price is much higher than that of ordinary goods, and some are even several times higher. But some parents are hesitant. Can children's food bought at high prices really meet the growth needs of their children? From the perspective of nutrition, children's body is not yet mature, and their demand for nutrients required for growth is richer and more comprehensive. At the same time, their ability to eliminate food additives is relatively poor, which determines that their demand for food is not exactly the same as that of adults. In the context of the continuous improvement of people's living standards, building a set of children's food standards suitable for the growth and development characteristics of children of different ages will help better take care of the healthy growth of children, help them improve their immunity and physique, which is also a beneficial experience of many developed countries. However, the current popular children's food on the market may not have the above functions. As some experts pointed out, the popular "children's food" in the current market is not food classification, but food marketed for children. Behind its booming market is the high premium and good money making in the children's market. Behind the continuous innovation of children's food market is the concept marketing carefully designed by merchants. The so-called "children's food" is just an ordinary commodity with enterprise standards as product standards. Whether it really has the nutrition required for children's physical growth and development needs a big question mark. For a long time, the industry standard of children's food in China is missing, which makes this market segment in a state of savage growth. In the past, there were many commodities that did not carry the banner of "children's food", but actually targeted children, such as spicy strips with "high oil, high sugar and high sodium", many of which came from small workshops with general sanitary conditions. These so-called "fifty cents goods" are popular in rural areas and do harm to the healthy growth of children in China. In recent years, with the deepening of relevant governance, these businesses that touch the lower limit of the children's food market are unsustainable, while those who take the high-end route are still not subject to due supervision and constraints. The lack of industry standards for children's food makes many food enterprises want to develop the children's food market and take a share in this high premium and high profit business. To make children's food "worthy of the name", the key is to put standards first. In June 2020, China non-staple food circulation association and others jointly issued a group standard of general requirements for children's snacks, which systematically stipulates the nutrition, health and safety of children's snacks. This is the first special standard for children's snacks in China. However, this standard belongs to the guiding standard issued by the industry Association, which is not mandatory and has a limited binding effect on businesses. In the long run, the children's food industry must take the path of standardization, scientization and standardization. We might as well follow the design of the bid section of infant milk powder, delimit the standards of different types of children's food according to the nutritional needs and physical characteristics of teenagers and children at different ages, and mark "children's food" only when it meets the corresponding standards, so that "children's food" will no longer become a "concept card" that businesses want to play. Of course, before the relevant regulatory measures are implemented, parents as consumers should remain cautious about the so-called "children's food". Instead of spending high costs and pursuing the sense of security packaged by businesses, it is better to take the initiative to learn some nutrition knowledge to make children eat healthily, green and safe.
