Yang Jiechi met with Sullivan, assistant to the US president for national security affairs

2022-03-15

On March 14 local time, Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the office of the Central Foreign Affairs Working Committee, met with Sullivan, assistant to the president of the United States for national security affairs, in Rome, Italy. The two sides had frank, in-depth and constructive communication on China US relations and international and regional issues of common concern, and agreed to jointly implement the consensus of the two heads of state, enhance understanding, manage and control differences, expand consensus and strengthen cooperation, so as to accumulate conditions for promoting the healthy and stable development of China US relations. Yang Jiechi said that implementing the consensus reached by the two heads of state is the most important task of China US relations. *** President Biden responded positively and made important commitments such as not seeking a new cold war, not seeking to change China's system, not seeking to oppose China through strengthening alliance relations, not supporting "Taiwan independence" and not having any intention to confront China. *** It is hoped that the US side will implement the commitments made by President Biden. Under the current international situation, strengthening dialogue and cooperation, properly managing and controlling differences and avoiding conflict and confrontation between China and the United States are in the interests of the Chinese and American people, the expectations of the international community and the interests of the people of the world. Yang Jiechi stressed that the Taiwan issue is related to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. In the three Sino US joint communiques, the United States clearly recognized that there is only one China. The one China principle is the premise for the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, and it is also the political basis of Sino US relations. The current US government has made a commitment to adhere to the one China policy and not support "Taiwan independence" on the Taiwan issue, but its actions are obviously inconsistent with its statement. China expresses serious concern and firm opposition to a series of recent erroneous words and deeds of the United States on Taiwan related issues. Any attempt to connive at and support the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and try to play the "Taiwan card" and "use Taiwan to control China" will not succeed. China demands that the United States recognize the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, abide by the one China principle, the provisions of the three Sino US joint communiques and the commitments made by the United States, and do not go further and further on a very dangerous road. Yang Jiechi clarified China's solemn position on issues related to Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong, and pointed out that these issues involve China's core interests and are China's internal affairs. No external forces can interfere. Any attempt to suppress China will fail. Yang Jiechi pointed out that adhering to seeking common ground while reserving differences and building a bridge of cooperation on properly handling differences is the correct way for China and the United States to get along with each other in the 50 years since the Shanghai Communique was published. Both sides should learn from history, grasp the premise of mutual respect, adhere to the bottom line of peaceful coexistence and grasp the key to win-win cooperation. The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues such as Ukraine, the DPRK nuclear issue, the Iranian nuclear issue and Afghanistan. (Xinhua News Agency)
