"The earth is burning"! UNEP: extreme wildfire disasters may increase sharply in the future

2022-02-25

"The earth is burning!" Prior to the United Nations Environment assembly on the 28th of this month, a report released by the United Nations Environment Programme on the 23rd warned that extreme wildfire disasters may increase sharply in the future, which will exacerbate problems such as air pollution. Germany's Der Spiegel weekly said on the 24th that this is the first fire report released by the United Nations Environment Programme in 50 years. Global warming and changes in land use patterns mean that most parts of the world may suffer more wildfires in the future, the report said. By 2030, wildfire disasters are expected to increase by 14%, by 30% in 2050 and by 50% by the end of this century. In recent years, the number of wildfire disasters in the western United States, central India and Siberia has increased. Even areas once classified as not prone to wildfires, such as the Arctic, are not immune. (Xinhua News Agency)
