Seawater desalination has a new sustainable solution with low energy consumption

2022-02-14

On February 11, the reporter learned from Harbin Institute of technology that the team of academician Ma Jun of the school of environment and the team of Professor Lai Zhiping of King Abdullah University of science and Technology (kaust) jointly tackled key problems and made a major breakthrough in the research field of membrane water treatment technology. Its results were recently published in the international journal advanced materials, In this study, ultra-high throughput porous graphene membrane was designed and synthesized, and efficient and sustainable seawater desalination was realized by using low-quality heat source. The increasingly serious global shortage of water resources and the high carbon footprint of current seawater desalination technology urge people to seek a sustainable solution with low energy consumption. Membrane distillation (MD) uses heat to drive water vapor through the membrane to obtain high-quality clean water. It is not only a seawater desalination technology with great application prospects, but also a key core technology in many zero emission processes. However, the low flux of MD membrane is the main bottleneck restricting the wide application of this technology. In view of this, the team of academician Ma Jun of Harbin Institute of technology and the team of Professor Lai Zhiping of King Abdullah University of science and technology in Saudi Arabia proposed a new process for preparing ultra-high throughput nano porous graphene film, which does not require secondary drilling and transfer process. The obtained graphene membrane provides a very short and fast transmission path for water vapor, which is one order of magnitude higher than the MD membrane flux reported so far, and the desalination rate is more than 99.8%. It shows great application potential and advantages in seawater desalination. Associate Professor Lv Dongwei of academician Ma Jun's team is the first / corresponding author of the paper. The research work was completed under the joint guidance of academician Ma Jun and Professor Lai Zhiping, and was supported by the national key R & D plan, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.
