LCD industry: radical or conservative?

2021-12-08

At present, China's panel factories have absolute advantages in the field of large-size LCD. At present, China panel factory has established absolute scale, efficiency and product advantages in the field of large-size LCD. Recently, TCL Huaxing and Xinli began to build small and medium-sized LTPS LCD production lines one after another, further expanding China's advantages in small and medium-sized LCD panels, showing mainland panel manufacturers' confidence in the LCD industry. However, in the long run, in the face of the radical layout of Korean manufacturers on the OLED technology route, China's LCD industry is not at ease. Will the LCD industry reproduce the subversive change that LCD replaced CRT "overnight"? LCD panel market continues to expand Recently, TCL technology has invested a total of 15 billion yuan to expand a 6th generation LTPS LCD display panel production line (T5) in Wuhan, which processes 45000 glass panels a month. It mainly produces and sells small and medium-sized high value-added it display screens, on-board displays and VR display panels by using VR, touch screen, Mini LED backlight display and ltpo technologies. TCL technology said in the announcement that this expansion can complement the oxide semiconductor display production line (T9) in products and technology, and help to further improve the layout of small and medium-sized production lines. Not long ago, Xinli Group invested 20 billion yuan to build the sixth generation TFT-LCD production line project to support the ultra-high resolution LTPS production line. Aiming at the market demand of small and medium-sized display screens such as high-end vehicle display market, industrial medical treatment and Internet of things, mobile phones, tablets and laptops, it is intended to differentially layout products and seek development breakthrough points. Dong min, Deputy Secretary General of China electronic video industry association, explained to reporters the business logic of TCL and Xinli's increasing investment in LTPS LCD: at present, mobile phone brands prefer to use OLED panels in high-end products, and the penetration rate will continue to increase, but LTPS LCD and a-Si LCD will still have tenacious vitality, which is determined by the uneven development of the global market and the diversification of users. In addition, LTPS LCD is also a required course for global panel manufacturers to develop and mass produce OLEDs. In the future, with the support of new technologies such as mini LED backlight and the vigorous development of emerging markets such as vehicle and Internet of things, small and medium-sized LCD will still have a broad market space. Cinno senior analyst Liu Yushi told reporters that although the large-scale expansion of domestic LCD panel enterprises has ended, when there is a structural shortage in some applications in the future, panel factories need to allocate production capacity in various ways, and the construction and expansion of production lines is also one of the ways. From the perspective of technology iteration, oxide, LTPS and OLED technologies have obvious growth prospects. Li Yaqin, general manager of Qunzhi consulting, said that LTPS has doubled this year. Oxides are relatively conservative in the face of LTPS competition, but they also maintain the growth trend, and OLED has a greater growth rate. At present, the main oxide and LTPS are mainly Korean and Taiwan manufacturers. With the localization of supply chain, China's Chinese mainland panel plant has strong growth opportunities. OLED challenges for both supply and demand LCD panels are undergoing innovative development of capacity increase and technology upgrading, and are also facing the "extrusion" of OLED panels. In terms of large size, according to omdia's research data, the shipment of large-size TFT LCD reached 237 million pieces and 56.8 million square meters in the third quarter of 2021, which was flat quarter on quarter and decreased year-on-year. The shipments of large-size OLEDs have double-digit growth year-on-year and month on month, and Chinese panel manufacturers are also continuously improving the shipments of large-size OLED panels. For example, Huike began to promote the production of generation 8.6 line in the second quarter of this year. In terms of TV terminals, for the OLED TV panels exclusively supplied by LGD, with the increase of the production capacity of Guangzhou OLED factory and the convergence of the price difference with the quotation of LCD TV panels, the data of trendforce Jibang consulting shows that the penetration rate of OLED TV panels increased to 2.6% in the first half of this year, and the shipment volume reached 3556000 pieces. Ricky Park, senior chief analyst of omdia, pointed out that Samsung has recently produced qd-oled panels and plans to produce more than 1 million. LGD plans to produce more than 10 million wold TV panels and start producing 83 inch and 48 Inch OLED TV panels in Guangzhou factory. LGD hopes to enter the larger panel Market and compete with LCD TV panels. In terms of small size, the penetration of OLED in the mobile phone panel is increasing day by day. Rigid OLED and LTPS LCD compete in the high-end and middle-end smart phone market. Rigid OLED is better because of its fast speed, high contrast and low power consumption. LTPS LCD occupies a seat in the middle and low-end mobile phone market. Chinese panel manufacturers actively expand the OLED mobile phone panel market. Mobile phone panels of Chinese mainland companies shipped about 36 million mobile phone panels in the third quarter of this year, up 37.4% from the same period last year, and penetration of the OLED smartphone panel was about 21.6%, according to QQ data. OLED BOE's entry into Apple's supply chain puts the Korean factory under competitive pressure. The application of vicino and Tianma in domestic mobile phone manufacturers is introduced smoothly, giving the outside world a strong expectation of increasing the production capacity of small-size OLEDs. Ricky Park pointed out that with the release of new 5g smartphone models, the demand for OLEDs has increased, and the total shipments of TFT LCD including LTPS and a-Si have been saturated. The challenge facing Chinese panel manufacturers is to promote the mass production technology of flexible OLEDs to catch up with the leading Korean OLED manufacturers. Whether large or small, Chinese LCD panel manufacturers are facing tough resistance from Korean OLEDs and strategic transfer from domestic manufacturers. Take the large-size OLED market as an example. At present, when Korean manufacturers have the upper hand, the cards of Chinese manufacturers are mainly concentrated on the printed OLED route, but its industrialization still needs time. Dong min believes that in the mature large-scale field, through the improvement of materials, process and supporting backlight, the performance and technology of LCD have been infinitely close to the new generation of display technologies such as OLED, and the cost advantage is extremely obvious. In addition, Chinese panel manufacturers have not yet achieved mass production of OLED, the industrial life of LCD will still be quite long. LCD industry needs more changes Since 2005, LCD has been popularized from small size to large size. In 2010, after the mass production of China's 8.5 generation line popularized the market, the market growth momentum weakened. With 5g and the Internet of things promoting the upgrading of products, LCD ushered in the iterative upgrading of 2K to 4K / 8K, high refresh rate, high resolution and other functions. Oxide and LTPS routes have greater growth potential. In this process, China's display industry ushered in a new era. Due to the squeeze of OLED on the market space, will the LCD industry face the risk of being replaced in the next few years and reproduce the great change that LCD TV strongly replaced CRT TV in that year? LCD industry is facing a crossroads of development. Should we continue to optimize product structure, upgrade technology and explore new scenarios, or strategic transfer? In recent years, Ouyang Zhongcan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has repeatedly said that there is still a large market demand for LCD panels. This time, the reporter interviewed academician Ouyang Zhongcan and the answer was to maintain the original judgment. Academician Ouyang Zhongcan stressed that the cycle of the LCD panel will be greatly extended by superimposing Mini LED backlight technology and BD cell stacked screen display technology. In terms of demand, 4K / 8K and larger size will still promote the new large-size production line of panel factory. LCD large-size high-end panel has become one of the future development directions. According to the data of trendforce Jibang consulting, the penetration rate of LCD 8K TV panel in the first half of this year was only 0.2%, which has great growth potential in the future. In this field, TCL Huaxing optoelectronics has a market share of 54.4%, followed by Youda optoelectronics with a market share of 22.6%. In addition to performance and technology upgrading, the size of the industrial camp and the speed of industrialization are another key to judge the competitiveness of a technology. Dong min believes that when LCD TV replaced CRT, it was mainly to meet basic needs, and the market did not need diversified technologies. Therefore, after repelling PDP technology, LCD technology quickly eliminated CRT technology. At present, in addition to the basic demand, the market is more improvement demand and innovation demand. Rich display application scenarios, so that different technical backgrounds and technical paths have corresponding scenarios, which can "show their strength". There is no "life and death" competition among various technical routes. Under the background of diversified scenes, display technology will be in full bloom for a long time. For this environment of coexistence and fierce competition of various technologies, Liu Yushi said that in the future, the LCD industry will change from extensive development and brutal competition in the early years to a refined development model. Dong min also suggested that if LCD is to continue to maintain its mainstream position, the first is to fully move closer to the new generation of display technology through minimally invasive technology. The second is to continuously improve the diversification and localization of raw material supply and ensure business safety. The third is to accelerate the continuous development of new business scenarios and new Internet of things applications, so as to break through the growth bottleneck of traditional consumption scenarios and further improve the operation quality.
