According to the physicist organization network recently reported that the world's first fully automatic unmanned cargo ship was unveiled in Norway, which is an important step taken by the marine transportation industry in the field of emission reduction. Recently, the "Yara bilkelan" freighter, which was delayed for a long time, transported 120 containers full of chemical fertilizer from a factory in Norway to a port 12 kilometers away. The annual carbon dioxide emission of the freighter is equivalent to that of 40000 trucks. The cargo ship Yara bilkelan is manufactured by Yara, a Norwegian fertilizer giant. The fully autonomous cargo ship is 80 meters long and 3200 tons. It will soon start a two-year trial operation. During this period, technicians will fine tune it so that it can learn to drive independently. Wayne Torre Holset, CEO of the company, said that the cockpit on the ship may completely disappear in a few years. At that time, the ship will be able to complete a voyage of 7.5 nautical miles (about 14 kilometers) with the help of sensors. On the Yara birkland, the traditional machine room has been replaced by eight battery compartments, and the power provided by renewable hydropower is up to 6.8 megawatt hours, equivalent to the power of 100 Tesla vehicles. The voyage of Yara bilkelan is not long. During the learning period of a few months after its launch, it must learn to navigate on a crowded channel and avoid colliding with passing merchant ships. In addition, autonomous navigation also requires a set of new rules that do not yet exist. Experts expect that electric ships will not become a general solution for the industry in the short term. All electric ships are suitable for short and stable routes and are not suitable for long-distance cross sea transportation. If ships want to sail long distances, the port must equip them with battery chargers. Therefore, the technical and infrastructure challenges still need to be solved. (Xinhua News Agency)
