Depression should be included in students' physical examination, and good things should be done well

2021-11-11

According to a number of media reports, the Ministry of Education recently replied to the CPPCC's proposal on Further Implementing Measures for the prevention and treatment of adolescent depression, which clearly included depression screening into students' physical examination, established students' mental health files, assessed students' mental health status, and paid special attention to students with abnormal evaluation results. In recent years, with social development, competitive pressure and changes in parent-child relationship, adolescent mental diseases, especially emotional disorders, are on the rise. According to China national mental health development report (2019-2020), the detection rate of depression among adolescents in China in 2020 was 24.6%, including 17.2% of mild depression and 7.4% of severe depression. Because many students, teachers and parents lack full understanding of depression, adolescent depression is often difficult to be found at the first time. For example, when some students are depressed and unwilling to communicate, parents may think that their children are just in a bad mood, but they don't know that this may be an early symptom of depression. At the two sessions this year, some CPPCC members submitted a proposal to strengthen the prevention and treatment of adolescent depression and prevent the development of depression to a younger age. Today, the Ministry of education has given a reply, which shows the importance of this issue. It can be predicted that the inclusion of depression in students' physical examination will help to achieve early detection and early treatment and prevent tragedies due to delayed treatment. But in this regard, public opinion also has some worried voices. For example, if children are screened for depression, will they be discriminated against by surrounding classmates and teachers? Will they be treated differently by the school or asked to suspend school for treatment? If there is no prediction and response to these concerns, I am afraid it will affect the implementation effect of this measure. First, some students may deliberately disguise themselves and cover up problems in psychological evaluation; Second, students found to be suffering from depression may be labeled and even suffer secondary injury. In order to bring depression into students' physical examination, we must first pay attention to the protection of personal privacy. According to China's civil code, privacy is a private space, private activities and private information that natural persons have a peaceful private life and do not want to be known to others. Depression screening results obviously belong to the scope of privacy protection. Therefore, "focus on students with abnormal evaluation results", pay attention to ways and means, and consider the feelings and wishes of the students concerned. Secondly, we should strengthen science popularization and reduce prejudice and misunderstanding. Nowadays, some people still think that depression is "too pretentious" and "small-minded". In fact, depression is a psychological disease that needs professional treatment. Relevant departments should strengthen the popular science publicity of depression prevention and treatment, guide people to treat depression correctly and face patients with depression calmly. In addition, we should strengthen the interaction between home and school and form a joint force. For students screened for depression, schools should not simply ask for suspension treatment and push them to their families. In addition to a few serious cases, allowing sick students to continue their campus life may help them get out of the psychological haze. Of course, to do this, not only schools need to improve the professional ability of psychological teachers, but also parents should improve their mental health literacy, pay close attention to students' psychological problems and intervene effectively in time.
