High Tech Frontiers | Ammonia Fuel Powered Ships Coming

2024-04-19

Not long ago, the world's first ammonia fuel powered container ship, independently developed and designed by China, received an order from a Belgian shipowner, marking a milestone in the development of ammonia fuel powered ships. With high environmental benefits, low transportation costs, and high volumetric energy density, ammonia has great potential in the low-carbon, clean, and green fuel fields, making it one of the main fuels for decarbonization in the future shipping industry. The global energy transformation has entered a critical period, and countries around the world are intensifying their planning and deployment of the ammonia fuel industry, actively promoting related technological innovation. Many large projects have already landed with spiral propellers rolling, setting off snow-white waves. Between Oslo, Norway and Hamburg, Germany, warm sunshine spreads over the vast sea, and a giant ship is breaking through the waves... This scene may be the world's first ammonia fuel powered container ship officially launched in 2 years. According to the Belgian shipowner CMB, this ammonia fuel powered container ship, independently developed and designed by the Shanghai Shipbuilding Research and Design Institute of China Shipbuilding Corporation, will be delivered for use in 2026. This type of ship has a total length of 150 meters and is equipped with ammonia fuel engines, ammonia fuel tanks, and support systems, capable of carrying 1400 standard containers. Compared to ships powered by fossil fuels in the past, this type of ship has reduced its annual carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 95%. The world's first ammonia powered container ship independently developed and designed by China Shipbuilding Corporation Shanghai Shipbuilding Research and Design Institute is under construction. From "ammonia fertilizer" to "ammonia fuel", when it comes to "ammonia", it may evoke memories of rural life: its presence is indispensable in the bags of fertilizers stacked in farmyards, and the pungent odor often smelled in the fields is sometimes attributed to it... Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, which is in a gaseous state at room temperature and pressure. It is one of the most abundant inorganic compounds in the world, and a considerable portion of ammonia is used to make fertilizers. At the end of the 19th century, with the rapid increase in global population, how to increase food production became a topic of concern for the whole society. At that time, scientists had already realized that nitrogen could play an important role in crop growth, and ammonia happened to be a stable carrier of nitrogen. Artificial synthesis of ammonia naturally became the object of research for scientists from various countries at that time. One day in 1905, German chemist Haber, who had been working continuously in the laboratory for several months, excitedly shared his "unexpected gain" with his colleagues: under high temperature and pressure reaction conditions, he successfully made ammonia gas with a concentration of 6% in a container. This marks the historical stage of traditional industrial synthetic ammonia technology, and the application fields of ammonia are gradually expanding. During World War II, due to the shortage of oil reserves caused by the war, countries turned their attention to other alternative energy sources, and ammonia fuel ushered in a valuable development window. In the 1940s, Brussels developed ammonia, coal, and gas hybrid engines to maintain public transportation during the middle of the war. However, the development of this engine is aimed at overcoming oil shortages, rather than meeting environmental requirements. After the war, with natural gas and oil being able to be supplied at lower prices, coupled with key factors such as production costs and the maturity of energy application technology, the development of ammonia fuel was put on hold. But people have to face traditionalism
