"Future City" Discovered 8 Ancient City Ruins

2024-04-02

Eight ancient city ruins have been confirmed to have been discovered in the Xiong'an New Area, known as the "City of the Future", and a large number of cultural relics have been discovered among them, spanning thousands of years with a clear heritage line. The reporter recently learned from the Xiong'an New Area Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology Workstation of the Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology that these 8 ancient city sites are respectively Nanyang Site, Guxian Site, Chengzi Site, Xiongzhou Ancient City Site, Anzhou Ancient City Site, Xin'an Ancient City Site, Maozhou City Site, and Guzhou City Heritage Site. On April 1, 2017, Xiong'an New Area in Hebei Province was established. In May of the same year, the cultural relics protection and archaeology workstation in Xiong'an New Area was unveiled. Immediately, a joint archaeological work team carried out archaeological pre survey and survey of 1770 square kilometers of cultural relics in a mesh style. So far, 10 special archaeological projects and 23 basic construction archaeological projects have been carried out, with an exploration area of 6.82 million square meters and an excavation area of over 20000 square meters. More than 4000 cultural relics have been unearthed, and 263 immovable cultural relics have been confirmed, including 8 ancient city sites. The team of the Hebei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted an archaeological survey of the Nanyang Site and its surrounding areas, and found that the "Da Nanyang" Site settlement group covers an area of nearly 18 square kilometers. The cultural relics have been preserved from the late Neolithic period to the Song and Jin dynasties, lasting for nearly 3000 years. Through excavation, it is basically confirmed that the main cultural connotation of the Nanyang site is the Yan culture from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty to the Han Dynasty. Two Warring States period city sites have been discovered at the site, which is the earliest remaining city site discovered in Xiong'an to date. Lei Jianhong, the head of the Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology Workstation in Xiong'an New Area, said that the archaeological discoveries at the Nanyang site have opened the curtain on urban archaeology in Xiong'an, uncovering the historical context of Xiong'an New Area from the late Neolithic period to the Song and Jin dynasties, and revealing its profound Yan cultural connotations. Xiong'an is named after the county names of Xiongxian and Anxin. Xiongxian's "Xiong" comes from the ancient city of Xiongzhou, while Anxin's "An" comes from the ancient city of Anzhou. In 959 AD, the Later Zhou Dynasty recaptured the two prefectures of Yan and Yun, namely Mao and Ying, and established Waqiao Pass as the Xiongzhou, which is the origin of "Xiong". In 992 AD, the Song Dynasty established the Shun'an Army, which was later renamed Anzhou, which is the origin of "An". The Xiongzhou Ancient City Site is located in today's Xiongxian County. Archaeological surveys show that there are magnificent brick towers in the north and south of the ancient city. Nowadays, the city gate tower on the ground no longer exists, but there are still some remaining city walls; The ancient city ruins of Anzhou are located in Anzhou Town, Anxin County. The city walls were originally built as earthen cities during the Song Dynasty to defend against the Liao army, reinforced into brick cities during the Ming Dynasty, and rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty. The existing city wall is 1.5 to 2 meters high and is two to three kilometers long. This "City of the Future" is making way for historical relics in large-scale construction. The original planning line of Haiyue Street in the start-up area crosses the protection area and construction control zone of Nanyang Site. According to the opinions of the cultural relics department, the route design of Haiyue Street has been adjusted to completely avoid the Nanyang Site. (Lai Xin She)
