The implementation of the Yellow River Protection Law for one year has resulted in a "high score answer sheet" for improving the ecological environment of the watershed

2024-04-01

The Yellow River Protection Law was officially implemented on April 1, 2023. Over the past year, the Yellow River Basin has made positive progress in improving the ecological environment, and the ecological landscape of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs has continued to improve. The Yellow River Protection Law is the second watershed law in China, following the Yangtze River Protection Law, providing strong legal guarantees for promoting ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Over the past year of implementation, the Yellow River Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources has lawfully strengthened the ecological protection and management of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in the Yellow River Basin. By strengthening ecological flow control, all 20 major control sections of 10 key rivers have achieved ecological flow standards. We have successively implemented ecological water replenishment in key regions, with a total of 1.448 billion cubic meters of ecological water replenished to areas such as Wuliangsuhai, Hekou Delta, and North China's groundwater overexploitation zone, achieving continuous flow of the Yellow River for 24 years. For the first time, a tributary reservoir was dispatched to discharge clear water during the concentrated sediment discharge period of the Yellow River water and sediment regulation, reducing the impact on aquatic organisms and habitats, and achieving the win-win goals of sediment discharge, sediment reduction, and ecological protection. Emphasis will be placed on comprehensive management of soil and water loss, achieving a dual reduction in both the area and intensity of soil and water loss in the watershed. In 2023, an additional 12500 square kilometers of soil and water loss control area will be added. (Lai Xin She)
