China's overweight element research accelerator set a new record

2024-03-25

On March 22, the reporter learned from the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the China Superheavy Element Research Accelerator (CAFE2) developed by the Institute had made a major breakthrough, successfully achieving the stable operation of 14.8 particle microamp current and 224 MEV energy beam on the target, and creating the highest current intensity record of similar devices in the world. The synthesis of overweight elements has always been a hot topic in the scientific community. Currently, scientists have discovered a total of 118 elements. In the past few decades, countries such as the United States, Japan, Germany, and Russia have successfully synthesized over ten new elements and hundreds of new nuclides. Russia and Japan have also developed specialized accelerator devices for the study of overweight elements, with a maximum flow intensity of 10.4 particle microamperes. CAFE2 was completed in 2022 and has been operating for over 10000 hours. Up to now, the Institute of Modern Physics has successfully synthesized 38 new nuclides, and the research results have been published multiple times in the international academic journal Physical Review Letters, and have been reported online by the Physics journal of the American Physical Society. CAFE2 has accumulated valuable data and experience for the study of super-renewal element synthesis, and the successful operation of the 14.8 particle microampere current provides favorable experimental conditions for the synthesis of new elements 119 and 120, providing greater possibilities for Chinese scientists to take the lead in synthesizing new elements in the eighth cycle of the periodic table and achieve a breakthrough in element naming zero.
