Reveal! Announcement of the Top 10 Archaeological Discoveries in China for 2023

From March 21st to 22nd, the 2023 National Top 10 Archaeological Discoveries Final Evaluation Conference, sponsored by the China Cultural Relics News and the Chinese Archaeological Society, was held in Beijing. After the project report meeting and comprehensive evaluation, the final judges voted to select the top ten new archaeological discoveries in China for 2023. They are the Bashan Site Group in Yishui, Shandong, the Shell Qiutou Site Group in Pingtan, Fujian, the Mopanshan Site in Langxi, Anhui, the Qujialing Site in Jingmen, Hubei, the Wangzhuang Site in Yongcheng, Henan, the Shuyuan Street Cemetery in Shangdu, Zhengzhou, Henan, the Qingjianzhaigou Site in Qingjian, Shaanxi, the Sijiaoping Site in Lixian, Gansu, the Chencun Porcelain Kiln Site in Huozhou, Shanxi, and the No. 1 and No. 2 Shipwreck Site on the northwest slope of the South China Sea. Guan Qiang, deputy director of the National Cutural Heritage Administration and vice chairman of the Chinese Archaeological Society, said that in 2023, the National Archaeological Work Conference will be held, and the work ideas of "great archaeology" will be put forward systematically, so as to promote Chinese archaeology to expand its overall pattern and vision and seek for great development. In the past year, new progress has been made in the research work of the fifth stage of the Chinese Civilization Exploration Project. 24 major projects of "Archaeological China" have been coordinated and promoted, 265 proactive archaeological excavation projects have been systematically carried out, and 1367 basic construction archaeological projects have been orderly implemented, demonstrating the outstanding characteristics of Chinese civilization. Selected as one of the top ten newly discovered archaeological projects in China in 2023, it is a prominent representative of field archaeological work in the past year. These new archaeological discoveries vividly showcase the long history and vast civilization of China with more vivid strokes, serving as the foundation of confidence and the source of strength. It is understood that the judges of the final evaluation committee were randomly selected from the expert pool of the evaluation committee by drawing lots, and 21 judges were from the Archaeological Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University and other units.
