In the future football field, will artificial intelligence (AI) be the "brain"? On the 19th, Nature Communications published a latest achievement from Google Deep Thinking. The research team reported a system called "TacticAI" that can predict corner kick results in football matches and provide practical and accurate tactical advice. A survey shows that experts at Liverpool Football Club in the UK choose "TacticAI" advice over existing tactics 90% of the time. This study may lay the foundation for the next generation of AI assistants, helping coaches determine the optimal player configuration and develop the most favorable counterattack tactics for victory. Corner kicks in football are very important as they can lead to direct scoring and are also an opportunity for coaches to intervene and improve game performance. The corner kick technique is usually determined before each game, so a system that helps analyze and improve scoring rates can effectively support human experts in making decisions. The Deep Thinking team is designing an AI driven coaching assistant that can analyze corner kicks with high-quality tracking data. The team has identified key strategic patterns using geometric deep learning techniques. Research has shown that "TacticAI" can accurately predict the first receiver after a corner kick and the direct result of the corner kick. It can also evaluate the possible performance of other players and generate different tactics that can improve game results. The team trained "TacticAI" using a dataset of 7176 corner kicks from the history of the English Premier League provided by Liverpool Football Club. They demonstrated the effectiveness of "TacticAI" and found that its proposed tactical settings were practical and feasible, and were determined by five experts (three data scientists, one video analyst, and one coaching assistant from Liverpool Football Club) to be indistinguishable from real-life scenarios. A survey shows that 90% of the time, users will choose the strategy of "TacticAI" instead of existing tactics. This technology can also be extended to other team sports where pauses can be called out. The position of the corner kick is very interesting, it is almost parallel to the goal, and the probability of scoring directly is not high, requiring tactical coordination. Simply put, either it's a long pass, directly sending the ball into the penalty area; Either it's a short pass, allowing the players to dribble and pass the ball into the penalty area. So, corner kick attacks not only require personal ability, but also tactics, and high-quality corner kicks can be converted into scoring. Nowadays, AI has intervened and become the coach who can best grasp the situation on site, formulating threatening tactics that players only need to execute. However, the situation on the field is constantly changing, and the player's form is fluctuating. The tactics are ideal, and whether they can be executed without compromise is another issue.
