What is the hometown and foreign land of literature? Mo Yan and Gu Erna have a conversation in Beijing

On March 11th, British Nobel laureate Gulner came to Beijing Normal University to have a literary conversation with Professor Mo Yan from the School of Literature at Beijing Normal University, who is also a Nobel laureate. Mo Yan expressed a warm welcome to Mr. and Mrs. Gourna's visit in his opening speech. He stated that despite the increasing development of technology and the constant talk of "ringing the alarm bell for literature", it has been proven that literature will never disappear with the progress of technology, and he and Gurner will not be "unemployed" due to the emergence of AI, because the unique image and thinking of writers can never be replaced by AI. In Mo Yan's view, the acquisition of this kind of thinking requires finding irreplaceable resources from the traditional culture of our own nation, and on the basis of inheriting and carrying forward the literary tradition of our own nation, widely contacting the common emotional experiences and practical pursuits of humanity, so that literature can truly go global - this is in line with Gu Erna's literary pursuit, and is also the basis for today's dialogue to unfold. In the literary dialogue section, the two writers start with "hometown and foreign land". Africa is "hometown" for Gulna, and "foreign land" for Mo Yan. Mo Yan believes that there is a significant difference between understanding "literary Africa" from works in the past and truly seeing "real Africa". He once waited by the Mara River to see the spectacular scene of groups of animals bravely crossing the river, but he never did; Those patient and beautiful golden crocodiles do remain motionless for hours, allowing birds to land on them, basking in sunlight and strong winds; And as he gazed at the snow of Kilimanjaro, he suddenly understood the frozen leopard on the high mountain in Hemingway's novels - "It climbed to the high mountain in pursuit of light and ideals, and its sacrifice had a bit of grandeur." For Gulner, Africa carried a different memory: his hometown was a small island in Africa, There are large beaches there - "Our beaches are in a sense connecting with the world and engaging in cross ocean exchanges with other cultures around the world." Just as the arrival of Zheng He's fleet in the past allowed Africa to understand China, home and hometown are not just geographical concepts, but also emotional resonance deep inside. Mo Yan further proposed that with the extension of the writer's creative experience and the expansion of the activity radius, everything in the world can be included in the scope of the writer's "hometown". Gu Erna talked about his reading experience of Mo Yan's "The Red Sorghum Family". He really likes the language description, narrative style, and the "atmosphere" it brings. He praised Mo Yan's novels for being particularly good at writing about what an ordinary person has experienced in the grand history, which is concrete and perceptible for readers. Mo Yan emphasized from the perspective of "storytelling" that a writer's writing cannot be separated from their hometown. The autobiography of a novelist is often reflected in all of his works. The autobiography of a novelist may contain elements of a novel, but the novel of a novelist precisely portrays a lot of the content of the autobiography. This is not a matter of honesty, but only an issue of art. Mo Yan uses Gurner's Abandoned as an example to illustrate that novelists do not depict a scene in a comprehensive and three-dimensional manner like historians do
