Transforming "Elderly Care" into "Enjoy Elderly Care" and Opening up a New Blue Ocean of Consumption in the Silver Hair Economy

2024-03-08

Every year during the National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, elderly care is a hot topic of concern. This year's Government Work Report proposes to strengthen the supply of elderly products and services, and vigorously develop the "silver economy". What are the current improvements in the lives of the elderly? What other expectations can we have regarding elderly care in the future? During the break from the conference, CCTV host Chen Weihong made a video call with an elderly person. What did they chat about? We are about to enter the "Weihong in the Two Sessions" on March 7th. A meal may seem like a small matter, but for many elderly people who are elderly, empty nest, and lonely, it is a top priority. With the intensification of China's aging society, "difficulty in eating" has become a major problem that troubles the lives of the elderly. How can elderly people eat conveniently and comfortably? Since last year, documents related to the development of community canteens and elderly meal assistance services have been intensively issued. This year's Government Work Report also clearly proposes to strengthen the construction of urban and rural community elderly care service networks, and strengthen the supply of elderly products and services. Various regions are actively building a "ten minute dining service circle" and creating door-to-door delivery services. A hot meal not only warms the happiness of the elderly, but also allows children to let go of their worries. Not only to solve the problem of elderly people having difficulty eating, but in recent years, multiple policies have been introduced and implemented from the central to local levels, including the construction of basic elderly care service systems and aging friendly transformation. In May 2023, the General Office of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued the "Opinions on Promoting the Construction of the Basic Elderly Care Service System", proposing that by 2025, the basic elderly care service system will cover all elderly people; Starting from September 1, 2023, the Accessible Environment Construction Law will be implemented, and more than 700000 households of elderly people with special difficulties in China have undergone aging friendly transformation. At this year's two sessions, many representatives and committee members also paid attention to the topic of elderly care. During an interview, National People's Congress representative Huang Jiusheng stated that guiding young people and social capital to participate in infrastructure construction and hardware investment for elderly care in rural areas not only provides material assistance to them, but also brings them more happiness on a spiritual level. Chen Weihong introduced that in recent years, aging has given rise to a considerable scale of "silver economy", and many industries have exploded into new development directions. For example, the new generation of information technology, as well as cutting-edge and intelligent devices such as mobile terminals, wearable devices, and service robots, are gradually entering the homes of the elderly, opening up a huge space for imagination. For example, the new demand for elderly care services has given rise to a series of new professions such as elderly bath assistants, elderly caregivers, and health caretakers, attracting many young people born in the 1990s and 2000s to join. At present, the scale of China's "silver economy" is around 7 trillion yuan, accounting for approximately 6% of GDP. According to expert predictions, by 2035, this data will reach around 30 trillion yuan, accounting for about 10% of GDP, which is a huge "blue ocean". Old age has a place to take care of, old age has a place to rely on, and old age has something to do. In the future, we look forward to the "silver haired economy" becoming a sunrise industry, transforming "elderly care" into "enjoying old age", and bringing more "youthful vitality" to the lives of the elderly.
