The Secretary General of the United Nations: Protecting human rights should abandon double standards

2024-02-27

The 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council opened in Geneva on the 26th. UN Secretary General Guterres, High Commissioner for Human Rights Turk, and President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly Francis emphasized in their opening speeches that protecting and promoting human rights is crucial for achieving lasting peace and security, and that humanitarian ceasefire should be immediately implemented in the Gaza Strip. Guterres said in his speech that human rights protection is the cornerstone of peace, and the path to peace begins with full respect for all human rights, including economic, social, cultural, and political rights, and the rejection of double standards. He hopes that countries can seize the opportunity of the "Future Summit" scheduled by the United Nations this year to prevent and end all forms of violence from the perspective of safeguarding basic human rights. Guterres once again calls for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the immediate and unconditional release of all detained individuals. Turk issued a statement titled "Human Rights: The Path to Solutions" in his opening speech, calling for the promotion of peace and the benefit of humanity through the protection of human rights. He stated that all countries must place human rights at the center of peace building, promote economic transformation with equality and sustainable development as the core, respond to environmental crises based on human rights, and ensure full and equal participation in global governance. Francis listed a series of regional conflicts and humanitarian crises in his speech, urging all parties to build the Human Rights Council as a platform for resolving issues through dialogue and cooperation. He specifically pointed out that the Gaza Strip should immediately achieve a humanitarian ceasefire and open humanitarian corridors to provide much-needed assistance. The 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council is expected to end on April 5th. (Lai Xin She)
