Expert: Drone attacks overturn traditional air superiority concepts

2024-02-26

On February 21st, the Japanese newspaper "Daily News" reported that drone attacks have overturned traditional air superiority concepts. On the occasion of the second anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Daily News interviewed Kylie Gryko, a senior researcher of the Stimson Center, an American think tank, about how the drones that were heavily used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict changed the form of war. The following is Griko's viewpoint, and the report is compiled as follows: It can be said that we are witnessing the democratization process of air power on the Ukrainian battlefield. So far, only major countries with high-level technological capabilities, industrial infrastructure, and complete infrastructure have possessed air power. But the emergence of cheap civilian drones is allowing even the weaker side to have air power. Actually, drones have long been used on the battlefield. The US military has used drones to carry out various tasks such as reconnaissance, tracking, and strike in the "anti-terrorism war" in the Middle East. But the drones used at that time were expensive military drones. Ukraine also used TB2 "Flagman" and other large military UAVs produced by Türkiye at the beginning of the war, but now the large-scale use is mainly civilian cheap UAVs. Russia is also learning from Ukraine's approach. The investment of drones makes it possible to real-time grasp the battlefield situation. As long as the number of drones is sufficient, even if the flight time of each aircraft is limited, long-term "residency" can be achieved by taking turns flying in low airspace. This is something that ordinary aircraft cannot achieve. People's ideas about air superiority seem to be changing. Traditionally, fighter jets were the main players in ensuring air superiority, but today, low altitude areas where drones operate have become new battlefields. Unprecedented new attack methods have also emerged. For example, drones can detect enemies hidden in trenches and drop bombs directly above them to complete the strike. By transmitting enemy coordinates back to our artillery units, the accuracy of shelling can also be improved, and this strike method can quickly evaluate the damage effect, making the shelling operation more lethal. This situation can be said to be more advantageous for the defensive side, as the attacking side must move, but in order to concentrate combat power for offensive operations, it is possible for the overhead surveillance drone to detect movements. This also makes the movement of the attacking side more difficult than before. Although this creates obstacles for Russia's efforts to expand its occupied territories, it also makes it more difficult for Ukraine to attempt to regain its territory. The battle will eventually turn into a war of attrition. Although cutting-edge technology is indispensable, it is also necessary to ensure a certain amount of weapons and ammunition. Although cheap drones are consumed quickly, they are also easy to replenish. It can be said that war is returning to the traditional direction of valuing mass production of weapons and equipment. The extent to which Ukraine can continue to ensure sufficient drones will also be a key factor in determining the direction of the war. The idle time of drones is constantly increasing. At present, the main focus is on single drone missions, and in the future, there will undoubtedly be a development towards a fleet of dozens of drones conducting missions while exchanging intelligence with each other. Moreover, with the introduction of high-level artificial intelligence technology, drones may become more autonomous in combat. Therefore, it is urgent to determine to what extent humans should participate in decision-making
