German media: The militarization of space in various countries has never stopped

2024-02-19

The website of Deutsche Welle Radio reported on February 16th that so-called space weapons can be anti satellite weapons deployed on the ground, as well as weapon systems deployed in space, targeting other spacecraft or ground targets. According to publicly available information, space weapons have not been widely applied, mainly because their technology is not yet mature. The statement that Russia is deploying nuclear weapons in space is currently causing a stir in the United States. According to the latest explanation from the White House, this is likely a type of anti satellite weapon being developed by Russia, which is itself a satellite capable of attacking satellites of other countries in Earth orbit. It should be pointed out that although reconnaissance satellites and navigation satellites are also important components of military equipment, they are not considered space weapons. Modern warfare cannot do without the support of reconnaissance satellites, navigation satellites, and communication satellites. For example, in the Ukrainian battlefield, reconnaissance satellites quickly send battlefield images to intelligence and command personnel, communication satellites ensure encrypted communication within the military, and navigation satellites are indispensable. Destroying enemy satellites often has the effect of "pulling a thousand pounds in four or two directions". Therefore, since the beginning of humanity's entry into the space age, the militarization of space in various countries has never stopped. The US military used bombers to test launch less precise anti satellite weapons at high altitudes in the late 1950s. The anti satellite weapon tests conducted by the Soviet Union in the 1960s also failed to achieve satisfactory results. Both the United States and the Soviet Union have also launched nuclear bombs into space for test explosions, which generated electromagnetic pulses that caused multiple other satellites to malfunction, ground communication networks, and power grids to malfunction. In the 1980s, both the United States and the Soviet Union further increased their research and development efforts in space weapons, but ultimately abandoned them due to high costs. The report states that with the development of space weapons, people from all walks of life are becoming increasingly concerned about their harm. Unlike airplanes, a satellite that is destroyed does not necessarily fall to the ground, but instead becomes thousands of fragments, threatening other spacecraft in orbit around the Earth. In 2021, a Russian anti satellite weapon test destroyed a Soviet era decommissioned satellite, and its debris posed a threat to the International Space Station. In order to curb the harm of space weapons, the United Nations Outer Space Treaty, signed by over a hundred countries, came into effect in 1967. The treaty prohibits countries from deploying nuclear weapons in space and establishing military bases on celestial bodies outside of Earth. The report states that although countries have not violated the treaty by deploying weapons of mass destruction in space, other related research and development has not stopped. Russia has developed a satellite called a "nesting doll" that can release a small satellite in orbit, which can shoot other spacecraft. In 2019, a "nesting doll" satellite briefly approached a reconnaissance satellite in the United States. The US Space Command also revealed in 2021 that it is developing space weapons based on "directed energy" systems such as lasers. (Lai Xin She)
