A still photo of the Beijing opera "Five Women Paying Birthday". The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority of Hong Kong provided a picture of "Only in the cold can we know the health of pine and cypress, and in times of adversity can we maintain our moral integrity. The Longevity Hall reminisces about the joy of heaven and harmony, with a smile on our faces." Amidst the festive singing of birthday greetings, the adapted Peking Opera "Five Women's Birthday" performed by the Youth Troupe of the National Peking Opera Theatre came to an end at the West Kowloon Cultural District Theatre Center in Hong Kong. The audience stood up excitedly, applauded, and did not want to leave for a long time. To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Chinese Opera Center, the National Peking Opera Theatre was recently invited to Hong Kong for a celebratory performance. Tian Lei, Vice President of the National Peking Opera Theatre, National First Class Actor, and winner of the 24th China Drama Plum Blossom Awards, led a youth troupe to present the grand opening play "Five Women Paying Birthday". This is also the first time the youth troupe has performed in Hong Kong since its formation in 2022. "Five Women's Birthday Salute" was originally a work created by the late Yue Opera screenwriter Gu Xidong in the 1980s. In 2022, the National Peking Opera Theatre established a youth group with the aim of cultivating talents and providing practical platforms. Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the premiere of "Five Women's Birthday Celebration", this drama was adapted into a Beijing Opera of the same name, with renowned director Yang Xiaoqing specially invited to direct it, and a group of outstanding young actors from different professions and genres in the theater were invited to perform. How to preserve the beauty of Yue opera and enrich the characteristics of Beijing opera in "Five Women's Birthday Salute"? Tian Lei frankly stated that the adapted works maintain the original vivid and lively stage presentation of Yue Opera, while strengthening the literary nature of the script, respecting the formulaic nature of Peking Opera, and practicing the integration of tradition and fashion in aesthetics. The bright stage, winding plot, and flowing singing style... In a performance lasting about 155 minutes, 17 young rising stars with solid skills, both civil and military, narrated classic stories depicting the warmth and coldness of human relationships and praising the virtues of filial piety. The venue was fully booked, and the audience moved with the play, either happy or sad, deeply influenced by the delicate and vivid performance. "Hong Kong audiences are very knowledgeable about drama," Tian Lei told reporters. This performance in Hong Kong is both an honor and a test. The show is called "All Liang Shangba" by the Beijing Opera Theatre (the Pear Garden community refers to famous actors in various industries as "Liang Zhu", and together they play, it is called "All Liang Shangba"). "We hope to take this opportunity to showcase the charm of young actors and let them shoulder the banner of Beijing Opera inheritance and innovation.". Zhang Jiachun, a national first-class actress and winner of the 31st China Drama Plum Blossom Awards, played Cuiyun, a maid of the Yang family, in the play. As a flower performer of the Xun school, she perfectly portrayed Cuiyun, who carries great righteousness and is gentle yet strong, and won applause for multiple singing segments. After the performance, several Hong Kong high school students took a group photo in front of the promotional background board of "Five Women's Birthday Salute" while savoring the charm of Beijing Opera art, "The teachers were exquisitely dressed, with clear tones, and their performances were truly pleasing to the eye." "The somersault scene was too exciting." "I didn't watch enough of the performance, and I would like to enjoy other Peking Opera plays in the future if I have the opportunity." "This is my first time watching Peking Opera, and I feel it's great. The essence of Chinese culture must be promoted well." Mr. Xie, a Hong Kong citizen, specially brought his wife and elementary school daughter to watch the drama. His words were not finished, The daughter on the side raised the brochure in her hand and pointed to Yang Sanchun, the adopted daughter of the Yang family played by young actor Guo Xiao. She hurriedly told the reporter, "Sister Sanchun is beautiful, kind-hearted, and filial to her parents. I love her the most!" "I hope my child can learn from the virtues of filial piety first."
