In the current round of the Palestinian Israeli conflict, a weapon called the "sponge bomb" has attracted attention, as Zhou Kai has described the sponge bomb as a "prison on the ground". The composition of its raw materials, internal structure, and operational application are still unclear, but the usage scenarios determine its functional characteristics. In short, this is a non-traditional weapon that can be used to turn the world into a prison. It is said that "sponge bombs" are mainly used to quickly block underground passages. Its working principle is relatively simple. This type of "bomb" does not contain traditional propellant components, and the projectile body is mainly a plastic container separated by a metal partition. The separated containers contain different liquid chemicals. When in use, metal diaphragms are pulled out or destroyed, and two chemicals contact and mix, causing rapid chemical reaction, producing a large number of foam and occupying the target space, and then foam becomes hard, blocking the underground passage. Different chemicals react quickly, occupy a certain space and play a role in an instant... These characteristics make the "sponge bomb" more or less the shadow of some foam weapons developed by the US military. In the 1990s, the US military launched a joint development program for non lethal weapons. The aim of the program is to develop a "fast-growing" foam that can produce a large amount of viscous substances. In 1993, the US military put into use a rapid setting foam in Somalia, which shows some achievements of this plan. After the chemical substances are mixed and released through the nozzle, a large amount of foam will be produced. This foam will form a very viscous substance in just a few seconds, which will keep the soldiers of the other side from moving forward. In the early 21st century, the US military also attempted to develop "sticky ball" weapons on this basis and used them to trap opponents' surface vessels. Compared to the achievements of the "sticky ball" weapon development program, Israel's "sponge bomb" does not produce mucus, but a hard "plug" that can be instantly formed. From this perspective, the name "Sponge Bomb" is likely derived from its ability to transform and expand like a sponge in a short period of time by dozens of times. In terms of functional performance, it focuses on "protecting" to promote "advancing" and "defending and assisting". Just as the foam weapon of the US military once caused controversy, the use of the "sponge bomb" also caused many concerns. In addition to the liquid chemicals used in sponge bombs that may cause eye injury or even blindness during operation, whether these chemicals will pollute the environment and cause humanitarian disasters has also become a focus of attention.
