Researchers have developed a new variety of salt alkali tolerant forage sorghum

2024-01-26

Reporters learned from the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 25th that, using the self-developed molecular marker technology for sorghum salt tolerance related traits, the researchers of the Institute have developed new varieties of salt tolerant forage sorghum "Muji No. 1" and "Muji No. 2". These two new varieties have been registered in the non major crop variety registration system of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. With the development of grain saving animal husbandry economy, the demand for high-quality roughage in China is increasing day by day. In 2015, the No. 1 central document of the central government proposed to accelerate the development of grass and animal husbandry. "However, China's basic national conditions determine that forage production cannot compete with grain for land. In addition to 1.8 billion mu of arable land, China has 1.17 billion mu of marginal land, including about 500 million mu of saline alkali land. Using these saline alkali land to develop animal husbandry is an important way to fill the gap in China's demand for high-quality forage." He Zhenyan, the main breeder of the new variety and a researcher at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said. Compared with major crops such as corn, wheat, and rice, sorghum has a high biomass and strong stress tolerance, making it one of the most promising new salt alkali tolerant forage crops for development. Forage sorghum, also known as sorghum hybrid grass or high dan grass, has advantages such as fast growth rate, strong regeneration ability, high biological yield, high nutritional value, strong adaptability, and good palatability. After years of unremitting efforts, He Zhenyan's research team, together with Jing Haichun's research team from the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ping Jun'ai's team from the Sorghum Research Institute of Shanxi Agricultural University, has successfully cultivated new sorghum green forage varieties "Muji 1" and "Muji 2" by using molecular marker technology for sorghum salt tolerance related traits. Afterwards, researchers conducted two years of regional and production experiments in Shandong, Shanxi, Qinghai, Gansu and other regions. The experimental results showed that "Muji 1" had an average yield of 6180.4 kilograms per mu, an increase of 4.0% compared to the control group; The average yield per mu of "Muji 2" is 6290.5 kilograms, an increase of 5.8% compared to the control. More importantly, "Muji 1" and "Muji 2" have juicy stems, strong disease resistance, and drought resistance. They also show good growth in light to moderate saline alkali soils in Dongying, Shandong. These two new varieties are suitable for planting in mid to late maturing areas of spring sowing in Jinzhong, Shanxi, Shuozhou, Shandong, Dongying, Xining, Qinghai, Haidong, and Zhangye, Gansu. He Zhenyan stated that the cultivation of this type of forage sorghum variety will provide strong seed source support for the development and utilization of medium to severe saline alkali land, adjustment of planting structure, and supply of forage production.
