Reproducing the Tower of Morph

2024-01-22

Although it has gone through 1800 years of vicissitudes, the Mosque still retains rich cultural information. Located on a high cliff and based on multiple terraces, those who come to pay their respects must raise their heads to see the huge and complete view of the pagoda. Against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds, the Morfo Pagoda presents the main features of the covered bowl style stupa with clear, concise, and accurate lines, reproducing the stunning beauty of history. The cultural relics and buildings in the Mo'er Temple site continue to be affected by erosion caused by natural environment, especially climate change. Will those beautiful "curves" gradually disappear over time? This poses extremely high requirements for the future protection, display, and reproduction level of the Mo'er Temple site. The Qixin Shemo'er Temple Site is located in the Kashgar region of Xinjiang. The covered bowl style stupa is located in the center of the site and is also one of the earliest buildings constructed. Archaeologists have systematically excavated the Mo'er Temple site around this iconic relic, and the results have important empirical significance for demonstrating the formation and development of a unified multi-ethnic country and the diverse and integrated pattern of the Chinese nation. The archaeological excavation process lasted for 5 years, and I began tracking the archaeological process of the Mohr Temple site in 2019. Mo'er Temple is located in the Kashgar region of Xinjiang. This has been an important node of communication between the East and the West since ancient times. When understanding the development process of cultural heritage and mutual learning of civilizations along the Silk Road, the towering pagoda on the steep cliffs of the wasteland, backed by the blue sky, is impressive. In the past ten years, the theme of the times, such as the "the Belt and Road", has attracted many famous scholars and experts from the fields of archaeology, large site protection, cultural routes, heritage transmission, cultural relic restoration, and archaeological site park planning around me. As long as we arrive in Beijing, everyone should always gather and exchange progress and achievements. Professor Xiao Xiaoyong from Central University for Nationalities and I are both active members of it. As he became the project leader for the archaeological excavation of the Mo'er Temple site, Mo'er Temple also became a hot topic of attention, and the meeting place even moved to Kashgar. Although the Mo'er Temple site has been rediscovered for over 120 years, there has been a lack of truthful and detailed content and analysis. People often describe it in a vague way: Mohr Temple is one of the earliest temples built after Buddhism was introduced to China, but the basic information about the nature, scale, and cultural relics of the site is vague. In 2019, Central University for Nationalities and Xinjiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology began excavating the Mo'er Temple site. Previously, this archaeological project had been included in the "Research on Multireligious and Localization" section of "Archaeological China". By the end of 2021, Xiao Xiaoyong earnestly told me that the "life" and value perception of Mo'er Temple had gradually become clear. Archaeologists have cleared the pedestal and related facilities of the pagoda, discovered multiple large building foundations, and unearthed precious cultural relics, including more than 10000 gypsum Buddha statue fragments... It can be clearly seen from this that the site had the characteristics of Indian Buddhism in the early stages and was later heavily influenced by Chinese Buddhism. On the occasion of the arrival of the new year in 2024, everyone gathers again. As they have just returned from the archaeological site in Kashgar, Mo'er Temple has naturally become the preferred topic of discussion. With the continuous deepening of work and the overlapping of achievements, the value judgments made by archaeologists on this site are clearly evident
