During an interview in Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province, the story of "One Rope" gave me a lot of inspiration. In 2020, Nanjing University of Technology opened a new campus in Jiangyin, encouraging research talents to deepen cooperation with enterprises. In recent years, the deep integration of industry, academia, and research has given rise to many innovative achievements, including the "high-strength rope" - carbon fiber rope jointly developed by the school and Jiangyin Falsheng Hongsheng Group. This new material is lighter in weight than traditional steel cables, and has better fatigue and corrosion resistance. It has now been applied in multiple new bridge projects. The surging momentum of industrial innovation comes from the driving engine of technological innovation. In the 1980s, "Sunday engineers" emerged in some areas of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and companies invited high-tech personnel from Shanghai to teach advanced technology, laying the foundation for local manufacturing. Following the same approach, Jiangyin adheres to close cooperation between industry, academia, and research. In recent years, it has jointly established technology transfer centers with multiple universities, vigorously promoting the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. This not only promotes the innovation of traditional industries such as textiles and steel, but also helps accelerate the development of emerging industries such as wind power, photovoltaics, and integrated circuits. It can be seen that industrial development cannot be separated from the basic support of "learning" and "research". If industry is compared to a big tree, scientific research and exploration are like roots, the deeper the root, the stronger the tree grows. On the contrary, "learning" and "research" cannot be separated from the "application field" of industry. Only by moving scientific research achievements from the laboratory to the production line can their application value be tested and better guide the next step of scientific research practice. Only by completing the transformation of technology and products from "bookshelves" to "shelves" can they truly benefit thousands of industries and form a driving force for economic and social development. It should be noted that there is still significant room for improvement in the current deep integration of industry, academia, and research. From the perspective of technological innovation supply, the conversion rate of scientific research achievements is not high enough, and a large amount of innovative resources have not yet formed real productivity. A survey carried out by the China National Intellectual Property Administration shows that in 2022, the effective invention patent industrialization rate of China's scientific research institutions will be 13.3%, while that of universities will be 3.9%, which needs further improvement. From the perspective of industrial innovation demand, China's traditional industries have a large scale, accounting for over 80% of the manufacturing industry. Enterprises urgently need new products, processes, and technologies, and need to rely on innovation to enhance competitiveness. Further promoting the deep integration of industry, academia, and research is necessary to effectively solve the supply-demand contradiction between technological innovation and industrial innovation, and better transform technological strength into industrial competitive advantages. On the one hand, in the first mile of technological innovation, it is necessary to strengthen the integration of industry and education, as well as school enterprise cooperation. For example, when Nanjing University of Technology established its Jiangyin campus, it focused on highly aligning its disciplinary and professional layout with the local industry. It not only provided support for enterprises in modeling and simulation, basic research, etc., but also encouraged scientific research talents to go to the front line of the industry to find problems, solve problems, and fill gaps, accurately meeting the needs of the industry. On the other hand, in the last mile of industrial innovation, it is necessary to strengthen the position of enterprises as the main body of innovation.
