The 7th District Council Member of Hong Kong is sworn in

On the 1st, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government held the swearing in ceremony for the 7th District Council members in the conference hall of the government headquarters. All 470 district councilors have sworn in support of the Basic Law and loyalty to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in accordance with the Oaths and Declarations Ordinance, under the supervision of the Secretary for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs of the Special Administrative Region Government, Ma Mei juan, authorized by the Chief Executive. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Li Jiachao, attended the ceremony. He made four demands to district councilors: they must support the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China and be loyal to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China; It is necessary to do a good job of "sending orders from superiors and reporting to subordinates", and play a good role as a bridge and link between the special zone government and residents; We must implement the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong" at the regional governance level and shoulder the heavy responsibility of maintaining national security; We must put citizens at the center and bring substantial improvements to community life. Li Jiachao expressed his hope that district councilors will cooperate with the SAR government to implement policies in the region, consolidate regional governance, and jointly build a better Hong Kong. According to the Interpretation of Article 104 of the Basic Law of Hong Kong passed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (referred to as the "Interpretation"), the person in charge of taking an oath has the responsibility to ensure the legality of the oath. Any oath that complies with the Interpretation and the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall be deemed a valid oath; Oaths that do not comply with the interpretation and the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall be deemed invalid and shall not be rescheduled. According to the principles set forth in the Interpretation and relevant legal provisions, the Oath Commissioner has determined that the oaths of all 470 district councilors are valid. The 7th District Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is composed of appointed members, members elected by district committee constituencies, and members elected by district council constituencies. There are also 27 ex officio members with a term of 4 years. The 7th District Council will assume its duties from January 1, 2024. (Lai Xin She)
