2023-12-21

On October 19th, the Wuxi Ethnic Orchestra's ethnic symphonic music and painting "Dreaming of Jiangnan" performed at the 2023 Purple Gold Culture and Art Festival hosted by the Propaganda Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and the Jiangsu Federation of Literary and Art Circles, at the Yangzhou Music Hall. This work was co created by renowned composers such as Wang Jianmin, Wang Yunfei, Xu Qiangqiang, Wang Aikang, Kong Zhixuan, and Chen Siang, and was directed by Sun Peng, the chief conductor and young conductor of Wuxi Ethnic Orchestra. This performance is the reunion of Dreaming of Jiangnan with the audience after the first appearance of the Taihu Lake Lake Culture and Art Season in the Great Hall of the People in Wuxi in 2022. The industry insiders and audience who watched this performance unanimously gave it high praise. As a work commissioned by the Wuxi National Orchestra, Dream of the South of the Yangtze River is always centered on the regional culture of the the Taihu Lake Lake area in Wuxi, rooted in the local traditional music art and the artistic heritage generated by the long-term development of its history. It skillfully integrates the local music art characteristics and modern music creation techniques, presenting a music feast with both the flavor of the times and historical accumulation for the audience. The work consists of the first chapter "Wu Feng Mei Yun" and the second chapter "Beautiful the Taihu Lake Lake", including six original commissioned works of Wuxi National Orchestra, including "River of Universiade", "Liangxi Music Poetry", "Mei Yun", "Wu Feng Drum Music", "The Second Erhu Concerto - the Taihu Lake Lake Style", and "Dream of Jiangnan". Dream of Jiangnan plays the new music of the times, with a lingering ancient charm. The painting of Jiangnan in the dream slowly unfolds with the narration of the music, making the listeners intoxicated. Overall, "Dream of Jiangnan" has achieved the unity of seemingly opposing elements of "innovation" and "inheritance" in terms of creative techniques, sound effects, and aesthetic expression. While demonstrating the familiarity of composers in the new era with modern music creation techniques, they have also completed the reproduction and reinterpretation of traditional folk music. The collision and integration of the past and the present have endowed this ethnic symphonic music and painting with a unique artistic charm. Rooted in folk music, the close connection between "Dream of Jiangnan" and local culture is reflected in the flexible application of various Jiangnan music elements such as Wuxi folk songs, Xiju, Sunan wind and percussion, and Jiangnan silk and bamboo. The final work of "Wu Feng Mei Yun" in the previous part, "Wu Feng Drum Music", is a leader in this field. This song is based on the musical elements of Wuxi folk songs and Xiju opera singing, and also draws on the performance characteristics of Sunan wind and percussion and Jiangnan silk and bamboo. The application of various local music forms, catalyzed by carefully arranged percussion music, has produced a very wonderful chemical reaction, fully reflecting the subtle and gentle regional character of Jiangnan and the leisurely and carefree lifestyle of Jiangnan people. In addition to drawing on the characteristics and styles of many traditional folk music art forms, the diverse expression of folk music materials also runs through the creation of "Dream of Jiangnan". Composer Kong Zhixuan's ethnic orchestral piece "Liang Xi Yin Shi" uses "Wuxi Jing" as the main creative material, expressing the instrumental music vocabulary of Jiangnan silk and bamboo. Through instruments such as Qudi, Liuqin, Yangqin, pipa, and Zhongruan, it vividly outlines the unique charm of the Wu region in Jiangnan, allowing the audience to feel the unique charm of Liang Xi as if they were in person.
