2023-12-20

Recently, the 2023 archaeological project acceptance meeting for nine archaeological sites was held in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. Experts from the acceptance team from Northeast Normal University and other units have conducted on-site inspections of the site and observed the unearthed relics. They believe that the archaeological excavation project at Jiujian Site has a clear and scientific approach, which meets the requirements of relevant regulations. They have also provided opinions and suggestions on the exploration and protection of unearthed relics on site. During the excavation of 625 square meters at the Jiujian Site this year, 149 relics were discovered, including 135 ash pits, 6 ditches, 3 house sites, 1 kiln, and 4 stoves. More than a thousand original pottery, porcelain, iron, stone, bone, brick, and other architectural components were unearthed, providing new archaeological data for understanding the development of handicrafts during the Liao and Jin dynasties. The Jiujian Site is located in Jiujian Village, Taiyangsheng Town, Datong District, Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, with a total area of 210000 square meters. It is a settlement site from the Liao and Jin dynasties and has a large ancient architectural foundation. The site was first discovered in 1982 and was designated as the Liaojin Site in 2009. From 2019 to 2023, a joint archaeological team was formed by the Heilongjiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the Department of Archaeology of Heilongjiang University, the Daqing Cultural Relics Management Station, and the Datong District Bureau of Culture, Sports, Radio, Television, and Tourism to conduct archaeological excavations on the site four times. Hou Wei, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Heilongjiang Province, introduced that more than 3000 cultural relics have been unearthed from the Jiujian archaeological site, which is an empirical evidence of the civilization and lifestyle of the Liao and Jin dynasties in Heilongjiang Province. It not only has important significance for studying the politics, economy, culture, and history of the Liao and Jin dynasties, but also witnesses the historical process of northern ethnic minorities integrating into the Chinese nation. In 2019, the archaeological team exposed 4 house sites, 44 ash pits, and 2 kiln sites, and unearthed more than 500 pieces of pottery, porcelain, iron, and bone artifacts. The Jiujian ruins are well preserved, with dense relics and orderly house structures. The individual size of the ash pits is relatively large. Bao Shuguang, the leader of the archaeological team and professor of Heilongjiang University, said that the large pottery fragments unearthed from the nine sites accounted for a large proportion. In addition, a small number of bricks, roof figures and other building components were unearthed. All kinds of signs showed that the site might not be an ordinary residential site. In 2020, the archaeological team conducted the second archaeological excavation of nine sites. Excavated an area of 500 square meters, cleared 49 ash pits and 11 ditches, and discovered 1 house site and 2 kiln sites. More than 300 artifacts, including pottery, porcelain, iron, bone, stone, copper coins, brick and tile components, have been unearthed. Yan Xianglin, the director of Daqing Cultural Relics Management Station, said that the unearthed building components indicate that there should be a larger building in this area, and the final formation of the site may be related to the large-scale handicraft production activities in the local area at that time. Since 2022, the archaeological team has conducted the third archaeological excavation of nine sites. This excavation is divided into two zones A and B, and a large number of relics such as pottery, porcelain, iron, stone, bone, copper coins, bricks and tiles, and other building components were unearthed. Zhao Yongjun, director of the Heilongjiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, said that such a large-scale non urban site is very rare among the relics of the Liao and Jin dynasties in the Heilongjiang region, representing a new type of archaeological and cultural relics from the Liao and Jin dynasties. There are abundant animal and plant remains unearthed from the Jiujian Site, and crops have been identified as millet, millet, wheat, buckwheat, soybeans, red beans, etc
