My World Culture Festival Tour: A Hundred Flowers Blooming in Spring in the Garden

2023-12-19

The annual World Culture Festival is one of the most anticipated carnivals for all teachers and students of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. After a three-year hiatus, the World Cultural Festival has resumed offline activities this year. The theme of this cultural festival is "Meeting the World, Reunion with Guangdong and Foreign Languages". It consists of three parts: a series of lectures on foreign culture, a world food corridor, and a cultural evening party. Representatives of consulates general from multiple countries in Guangzhou, leaders of universities both inside and outside the province, international students, and teachers and students from Guangdong and Foreign Languages gathered together to celebrate the rich diversity and harmonious integration of culture. As an international student, while sharing the customs and traditions of my country - Indonesia - with the world, I also feel the sparks of cultural collision and its profound significance. More than a month before the opening of the World Cultural Festival, I received an important task - to partner with Wendy Rizalna and Annisa Syanindita from Indonesia to give a speech on the theme of Indonesia in a series of foreign culture lectures. The keynote speeches of international students from various countries will serve as a prelude to the opening of the World Cultural Festival, showcasing the scenic spots, historical sites, and cultural characteristics of different countries, deepening students' understanding of different countries and cultures. After careful planning, we have decided to introduce to you the proud tourist destination of Indonesia, Bali, the rapidly developing capital Jakarta, and Sumatra, which has regional characteristics. The speech will focus on the cultural landscape and culinary culture of these places, unveiling the mystery of Indonesia and presenting some unfamiliar Indonesian cultures to the public. On the day of my Indonesian keynote speech at the Foreign Culture Lecture Series, Wendy Rizalna and I (left) were fully seated in the classroom. Not only students majoring in Indonesian, but also many students from China and other different countries came to listen to the speech. Although we had made sufficient preparations in advance, my partners and I did not expect that everyone's interest in Indonesian culture would be so strong, and we suddenly became nervous under such a "big scene". During the speech, Wendy and I introduced Indonesian culture in both English and Chinese, helping students from different countries establish their initial impressions of Indonesia; During the Q&A session, Annisa patiently answered various questions about Indonesian culture for the audience below. The positive feedback from the audience surprised us greatly, and their cheers and applause also inspired us. The audience below were immersed in the mysterious and colorful Indonesian culture, and they eagerly raised their hands to ask questions, showing strong curiosity and love for Indonesian culture. Rather than being a formal speech, it is more of a profound exchange. Our introduction to Indonesian culture and the audience's feedback on Indonesian culture have formed a virtuous cycle, allowing audiences from every country to have a new thinking and understanding of the inclusive world culture. While cherishing their own culture more, they also maintain curiosity and tolerance towards other cultures. After the event, many students stayed behind to continue discussing Indonesian culture with us. The warm and harmonious atmosphere made me fully feel the saying "culture knows no borders"
