Chinese scientists have made new breakthroughs in the field of nanometals

The reporter learned from Chongqing University that the team led by Huang Xiaoxu from the School of Materials Science and Engineering and his collaborators have made new breakthroughs in the field of nanometallic research using independently developed three-dimensional transmission electron microscopy technology. On December 1st, Beijing time, the relevant research results were published in the international academic journal Science. Traditional electron microscopy techniques can only observe the surface of the sample or the two-dimensional projection of the three-dimensional structure inside the material, greatly limiting people's understanding of the microstructure of the material. Over the past 20 years, global scientists have been committed to developing three-dimensional characterization technologies, and significant progress has been made in the development of three-dimensional characterization technologies with spatial resolution at the micrometer scale. However, to solve deeper material science problems, three-dimensional characterization techniques at the nanoscale or even atomic level are required, and achieving this goal is extremely challenging. After more than 10 years of effort, Huang Xiaoxu's team has developed a series of three-dimensional transmission electron microscopy technologies based on electron diffraction with the support of national key research and development plans and other projects, filling the gap in nanoscale three-dimensional electron microscopy orientation imaging technology. Researchers introduced that this study utilized three-dimensional orientation imaging technology to achieve the first three-dimensional electron microscopy study of plastic deformation of nanometals. It discovered the anomalous phenomenon of recoverable plastic strain in nanometals and revealed the physical essence of this phenomenon. This new discovery has developed the theory of nano metal plastic deformation, which will provide theoretical guidance for the development of advanced nanostructured materials, prediction and control of nanomaterial activation behavior, and optimization of micro/nano device functions. It is understood that Huang Xiaoxu's team has been committed to advanced characterization techniques and research on nanometals for a long time. In recent years, they have achieved multiple innovative results in the research and development of three-dimensional characterization techniques, deformation mechanisms and strengthening mechanisms of nanometals, and related achievements have been published in international academic journals multiple times.
