US Announces Training Status of Fighter Pilots

2023-11-15

Recently, the US Department of Defense released information on the training of US fighter pilots and drone controllers. The US Department of Defense stated that the US Air Force, guided by modern warfare concepts such as the "Future Air Combat Concept", is continuously promoting the transformation of training modes to "high-end" and thereby improving the level of air combat. According to reports, the training cycle for US fighter pilots needs to reach over 6 years, including 4 years of study at the Air Force Academy, at least 1 year of pilot specific training, and at least 1 year of fighter operation training. The study at the Air Force Academy is mainly divided into two parts: theoretical and basic operations. After passing the graduation assessment, the trainees are assigned to various military aviation training bases for specialized training. At this stage, the personnel elimination rate or delayed graduation rate can reach as high as 20% to 30%. The US Air Force and Navy fighter units select "quasi fighter pilots" from the trainees who have received specialized training each year to participate in the final fighter operation training based on the vacancy situation of pilot positions. Only after completing all training can one become an official fighter pilot. According to the report, after taking up duty, US fighter pilots mainly adopt two modes of simulation training and practical training to improve their combat skills. In simulation training, pilots use a "full mission flight simulator" for training. The training courses include rapid takeoff and takeoff, over the horizon aerial firepower attacks, and aerial combat. With the help of advanced virtual technology, fighter pilots can immerse themselves in combat scenarios such as "receiving orders to take off within 15 minutes", "rapid task switching during air duty", "using missiles to aim and destroy targets 100 kilometers away", "getting rid of enemy entanglements and completing strike missions". According to US Air Force officials, simulation training can significantly reduce ammunition loss, restore training situations through video, correct incorrect actions, and reduce single training costs by more than 60% compared to practical training. Practical training is divided into fighter formation training, multi aircraft joint training, and single machine training. Single machine training includes courses such as takeoff, conducting continuous tasks, and returning. For example, pilots of F/A-18 carrier based aircraft need to complete training for takeoff, information transmission, short and long range missions, and return padlocks. The report also stated that drones will play an important role in the future air battlefield, so the US military attaches great importance to the training of drone controllers. The drone controllers are trained in groups based on their responsibilities and tasks. The takeoff and landing operation group mainly conducts takeoff and landing recovery control and simulated attack training, while the task control group implements training on drone route flight, situational awareness, and other aspects. Intended to cover up the problems and drawbacks, foreign media claim that the US military has made public the training of fighter pilots and emphasized the effectiveness of the training to offset the negative impact of frequent fighter accidents in recent times and to cover up the problems and drawbacks of relevant parties. Since the beginning of this year, multiple active main fighter jets such as the F-35 and F-16 have experienced consecutive flight accidents, which has raised doubts about the combat readiness level of US fighter pilots. According to official US agencies, after the US military began implementing the Budget Control Act, funding for pilot training in real aircraft takeoff was reduced, and a large number of training courses could only be transferred to ground simulators. From a data perspective, the average flight hours of US Air Force pilots vary from
