Unveiling of the first medium to high energy inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer in China

2023-11-13

On November 12, the high-energy inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer (hereinafter referred to as the "high-energy inelastic spectrometer") jointly built by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "Institute") and Sun Yat sen University was unveiled in the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) Park. This is the first inelastic scattering spectrometer in CSNS and the first medium and high-energy inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer in China, Filling the gap in high-energy inelastic neutron scattering above 100 meV in China. The high-energy inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer (provided by Sun Yat sen University) is one of the eight cooperative spectrometers for the construction of the spallation neutron source. Since September 2019, the construction team has conquered a series of key technologies, overcome numerous difficulties such as the epidemic, and finally successfully produced the first neutron beam on January 12, 2023, marking the successful development and installation of the spectrometer equipment and entering the debugging stage. The inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer can not only obtain the spatial distribution information of scattered neutrons, but also obtain the energy changes of scattered neutrons. It can measure the dynamic behavior of material microstructure in the momentum and energy space, and is the most direct tool for studying material element excitation (such as lattice and spin dynamics). CSNS has planned three direct geometric inelastic neutron scattering spectrometers based on the energy scale and energy resolution requirements of elemental excitation. The high-energy non elastic spectrometer built this time has an incident neutron energy of 10-1500 meV, with an optimal energy resolution of 3%. It provides a 1.5-800K high and low temperature environment and a 7T magnetic field environment. By utilizing the cooperation of Fermi chopper and bandwidth chopper, it can achieve fast switching between multi wavelength mode and single wavelength mode. Wang Yifang, an academician of the CAS Member and director of the Institute of High Energy, said that he hoped that the two sides would continue to maintain good cooperation, give full play to the unique advantages of neutron spectrometers, and make a number of major research achievements in multidisciplinary basic frontier and applied research fields. Gao Song, academician of the CAS Member and president of Sun Yat sen University, said that he expected that after the spectrometer was opened and operated, it would adhere to the world's scientific and technological frontier and national strategic needs, actively serve the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, and actively promote the development of China's neutron science and technology.
