Recently, a lecture event titled "The Impact of Overseas Chinese Economy on the Development of Modern Guangdong - Taking Guangzhou and Chaoshan Regions as Examples" was held at the Bantang Art Cantonese Life Experience Hall in Liwan Lake Park, Guangzhou. The event is hosted by the Propaganda Department of the Liwan District Committee of the Communist Party of China in Guangzhou, co organized by the Liwan District Returned Overseas Chinese Federation and the Changhua Sub district Office of the Liwan District People's Government, and organized by Xiao Geng's Cross border Reading Club. The aim is to provide new ideas for exploring how the overseas Chinese community can continue to promote high-quality regional economic development in the new era. This is one of the series of activities organized by the Propaganda Department of the Liwan District Committee, including the "Yongqingfang Grand School" and the "Interview with Famous Yongqingfang Masters". The series of activities of "Yongqing Fang Da Xue Tang" and "Yongqing Fang Famous Experts Interview" are important cultural brands that the Liwan District Committee Propaganda Department is fully promoting the construction of a strong cultural zone. Since its inception, the event has extensively invited domestic and foreign cultural celebrities, industry scholars, and experts to discuss and exchange on hot topics such as politics, technology, culture, and cities. It has developed into a "city level" event brand, effectively enhancing the brand strength and reputation of Lingnan culture. Liwan is the birthplace of Guangzhou, which has become a millennium old commercial capital. Located in Liwan, Guangzhou's Thirteen Branches were specialized ports for foreign trade in the Qing Dynasty. During the "One Port Trade" period, Guangzhou's Thirteen Branches became the only foreign trade port in the Qing Dynasty for 85 years. It can be said that in those days, Liwan was not only the first station for non commissioned officials, businessmen, and foreigners from the Central Plains to enter Guangzhou, but also the starting point for local people to cross the sea and immigrate to foreign countries; Many overseas Chinese who have returned from overseas are also the first step to step out of or onto their homeland from the west embankment of Xiguan. This exchange between China and the West has led to Liwan becoming an urban hometown of many overseas Chinese. In the lecture, Chen Hongyu, Counselor of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, took the industrial development, social changes, urban construction, and cultural continuity of overseas Chinese in Guangzhou and Chaoshan as examples to explain the role of the overseas Chinese economy in the modernization process of Guangdong's economy and society. Chen Hongyu narrates from three parts: the modernization of overseas Chinese and the Chinese economy, the formation and development of modern overseas Chinese economy in Guangdong, and the role of overseas Chinese economy in the modernization of Guangdong's economy and society. As is well known, Guangfu (Guangzhou Prefecture) and Chaoshan (Chaozhou Prefecture) were the main overseas Chinese towns in modern Guangdong. According to incomplete statistics, Guangzhou currently has over 2.4 million overseas Chinese and Hong Kong and Macao compatriots from Guangzhou. Why did Guangfu (Guangzhou Prefecture) and Chaoshan (Chaozhou Prefecture) become the main overseas Chinese towns in Guangdong in modern times? Chen Hongyu stated that from the perspective of the formation path of modern Cantonese overseas Chinese and Chaoshan overseas Chinese, the reasons must be combined with the world and Chinese historical background at that time, especially from the unbalanced development pattern of international, China, and Guangdong. Chen Hongyu stated that the overseas migration of Chinese people has played a significant role in promoting the development of Guangdong's economy. They brought back funds and advanced concepts, with transportation being the first, business flourishing, industry flourishing, and municipal governance as the root. Overseas Chinese represented by Sun Ke, Lin Yunxin, Liu Jiwen, Cheng Tiangu, etc. actively planned and promoted urban transformation, such as the construction of Changdi Road in Guangzhou at the end of the 19th century; From 1919 to 1921, Guangzhou completed the demolition of city walls and converted to the construction of arcade roads, bringing huge business opportunities to the economy. At the same time, overseas Chinese lead the way
