Strengthen Confidence, Stabilize Expectations, Promote Development | Guangzhou Strives to Build a Capital of Marine Innovation and Development

2023-10-31

From the starting point of the "Haisi" over a thousand years ago to the "One Port Trade" over a hundred years ago, the ocean has achieved a shining moment of urban prosperity in Guangzhou's history. During the historical intersection of the two centenary goals, Guangzhou has comprehensively built a strong marine city, opening a new chapter in the development and construction of marine cities. Develop a three-year action plan for strengthening the city through the ocean, develop a plan for the development of emerging marine industries, and strive for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Shipping Joint Trading Center to be listed in Nansha by the end of the year... A series of major measures are about to be implemented, unleashing the surging momentum of the "blue engine" and slowly unfolding a thousand mile sea view in Guangzhou. Actively integrating the development strategy of a national maritime power into the new track of promoting the marine economy, starting from the top-level design, Guangzhou will promote the new track of promoting the marine economy. In June 2022, the State Council issued the "Overall Plan for Deepening Global Cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao in Nansha, Guangzhou", which became an opportunity for the integration of ocean strategy into Guangzhou's urban strategy. In August of the same year, Guangzhou issued the "14th Five Year Plan for the Development of the Marine Economy in Guangzhou", promoting the construction of the Southern Marine Science and Technology Innovation Center in Nansha, and supporting Nansha to deepen comprehensive cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao towards the world. In July of this year, the 6th Plenary Session of the 12th Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee proposed to fully build a city of marine innovation and development, and create a "blue engine" for high-quality development in Guangzhou. The implementation of strategic plans one by one has promoted the continuous optimization of Guangzhou's business environment and empowered the development of Guangzhou's marine economy. In May of this year, the Guangzhou Ocean Industry Innovation Alliance was officially established to gather marine technology innovation resources. The alliance is jointly initiated by 30 maritime universities, research institutes, and enterprises, aiming to promote innovative development of the marine industry and promote exchanges and cooperation. At present, Guangzhou has gathered 58 research institutions related to the sea, including 4 national major development platforms, 36 important research institutions related to the sea, and 18 universities related to the sea; There are 32 marine science laboratories, including 7 key laboratories of the State, the Ministry and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. With the accumulation of marine science and technology innovation resources, Guangzhou is full of confidence in the development of the marine city. On August 25th, the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey completed its latest scientific research voyage and docked at the scientific research dock located on Longxue Island in Nansha District. This scientific research vessel conducted the first 302.07 meter full core scientific drilling on the northern shelf of the South China Sea, breaking the depth record of the Quaternary full core drilling in China's continental shelf waters. At the Guangzhou Nansha Huanong Fisheries Research Institute, the combination of industry, academia, and research has yielded fruitful results. "Nansha Green Crab" and "Huangge Small Tiger Shrimp" have won the National Geographic Indication Certification Trademark, which is the cultivation achievement of relying on technological innovation to overcome industrial technology bottlenecks. The development of marine technology in Guangzhou not only serves the country, but also benefits people's livelihoods. As an important support for the marine economy, Guangzhou is committed to building Guangzhou Port into a high-level gateway hub for opening up in the new era by jointly building national trade channels and shipping. According to data, in 2022, Guangzhou Port completed a cargo throughput of 656 million tons and a container throughput of 24.86 million TEUs, making it the only port in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area that maintained positive growth in both indicators. As of the end of December 2022, Guangzhou Port has a total of 199 container routes, including 154 foreign trade routes
