Thai teenagers experience Chaoshan culture

Recently, over 300 teenagers from Thailand came to Shantou, Guangdong to learn Chinese, visit universities, visit scenic spots, and experience intangible cultural heritage, embarking on a special journey of seeking roots. Immersive Experience of Chaoshan Culture: On the morning of October 10th, the "Roots in the Motherland and Love Hometown" 2023 China Root Hunting Summer Camp (Guangdong Shantou Camp), hosted by the China Overseas Chinese Federation and organized by the Guangdong Overseas Chinese Federation and Shantou Overseas Chinese Federation, opened in the port area of Shantou Small Park. 30 Thai Chinese teachers and students embark on a 10 day journey to search for roots in Chaoshan from here. At the opening ceremony, a lively performance of Chaozhou gongs and drums made Thai teachers and students feel the warmth of Shantou. Subsequently, under the guidance of the tour guide, Thai teachers and students visited places such as the Shantou Opening History Exhibition Hall, Shantou Overseas Chinese Approval Museum, and Cai Chusheng Film History Museum, immersing themselves in the history of Shantou and experiencing the rich heritage of a century old commercial port and the hometown of Chaozhou people. "15 year old Thai girl Zhang Lilin tried to express her purpose of participating in the summer camp in Chinese. It is understood that in the summer camp, Thai teachers and students will not only learn Chinese traditional culture, Paper Cuttings, calligraphy and other Chinese traditional culture, but also learn Chaoshan local characteristic culture, including Chaoshan dialect, Chaoshan Gongfu tea, overseas Chinese criticism, English song and dance, Chaozhou cuisine, Chaozhou opera and other characteristic courses. Liu Xingeng, Vice Chairman of Shantou Overseas Chinese Federation, stated that although these teenagers were born overseas, they are connected by blood, have the same origin, and share the same culture and lineage with us. The journey of seeking roots allows young people to experience the connotation and essence of Chinese culture and Chaoshan culture up close, experience the local customs and traditions of Shantou, the hometown of overseas Chinese, and appreciate the spirit of courage and struggle of their predecessors. I hope that in the future, this group of Chinese teenagers can become friendly ambassadors for promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and Thailand. Recently, Shantou University East Coast Campus has also welcomed a group of Thai guests to learn Chinese in universities. From October 8th to 20th, Shantou University, in collaboration with the Thai Chinese Education Foundation, held the 2023 "Experience of Traditional Chinese Culture" summer camp. 284 young people and team leaders from all over Thailand gathered in Shantou to experience the ancient charm and glory of Chaoshan culture together. Shantou is a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese in China, and the summer camp itinerary revolves around "overseas Chinese". On campus, teachers and students learn Mandarin and Chaoshan dialect daily language; Outside the campus, 'seeking roots' is the highlight of this trip. In recent days, teachers and students have visited Changlin Ancient Port and the former residence of Chen Cixue, experienced the ecological culture of Nan'ao Island, visited the small park cultural block and Chaoshan History and Culture Expo Center, observed and experienced Chaoshan intangible cultural heritage such as Chaozhou Opera, Chaozhou Embroidery, Chaozhou Cuisine, Chaoyang Paper Cuttings, Yingge Dance and Gongfu Tea Art, and felt the excellent traditional culture of Chaoshan
