2023-10-11

According to a recent report on the website of the Russian newspaper Il Novosti, the Russian Pacific Fleet will add a new type of submarine. The Type 636 Yakutsk will undergo testing in the coming years before joining the Navy. The submarine crew is already being formed. Experts point out that the Pacific direction will become the main stage of major power confrontation in the future, and the fleet strength there urgently needs to be strengthened. Sources have revealed that the Russian Ministry of Defense has agreed to the Pacific Fleet receiving the Yakutsk submarine. Currently, the new submarine is recruiting crew members. By the end of this year, it will be staffed and ready to carry out tasks. Next year, the crew will receive training and board the boat. Military historian Dmitry Bortenkov told The News that the Type 636 is Russia's most modern submarine to date. The expert reminded: "They are actively participating in special military operations, using 'caliber' missiles to strike the enemy. The Yakutsk is an upgraded submarine built for the Pacific Fleet, where only a few 877 submarines are nearing their lifespan and need to be replaced with new ones. Each new submarine will significantly enhance the fleet's strength. The 636 can strike sea and ground targets, making it suitable for working in the Sea of Japan. They have completed their long voyages more than once Military expert Vasily Kashin pointed out that the strength of the Pacific Fleet urgently needs to be strengthened. He explained: In the long run, our fleet will strengthen its activities in the region. The Pacific will be the main stage for major powers to compete, and maintaining naval power there will largely determine a country's world political status. Therefore, we are striving to strengthen the strength of the Pacific fleet. Firstly, multifunctional submarines will participate in the escort work of the Pacific fleet's nuclear submarines. Secondly, they are the 'caliber' missile transport required by the Pacific fleet Carrying tools. There have always been such submarines in the Pacific, but they need to be updated now According to reports, the 636 submarine was initially developed for export to Warsaw Pact countries. Russia later decided to purchase an upgraded version of the 636.3 model for the fleet. Compared to the original version, the 636.3 model has better airworthiness and lower noise, and is also equipped with modern automatic control systems and navigation systems. The Type 636.3 is considered one of the quietest submarines in the world, hence its name "Black Hole" in the navy. Their design purpose is to carry out various tasks - destroying surface and underwater targets, conducting patrols and reconnaissance. These submarines have a displacement of over 3900 tons, a length of 74 meters, a speed of up to 20 knots, and a self-sustaining capacity of 45 days. Each submarine is equipped with 6 533mm torpedo launch tubes, which can launch torpedoes, mines, and "caliber" - PL cruise missiles. (Compiled by He Yingjun)
