How to change it? Why change? - Interpretation of Beijing's "New Middle School Entrance Examination" Policy

2023-09-27

Exam reform concerns thousands of families. On the 26th, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission released the reform policy for the examination and enrollment of high school students in Beijing. What are the changes in the "New Middle School Entrance Examination" policy? What are the reasons behind the reform? The reporter interviewed the head of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and frontline educators to interpret the reform policies. On June 24, 2023, at the Shuangyushu Campus of Beijing 101 Middle School, candidates clapped their hands with the teacher before entering the exam center. Xinhua News Agency reporter Ren Chao reduced the scoring subjects for admission to the middle school entrance examination to six. Previously, Beijing's middle school entrance examination policy was divided into two parts: mandatory and elective subjects. This round of the "New Middle School Entrance Examination" cancelled the selection process and, based on the characteristics of different subjects, divided the middle school academic level examination subjects into three categories: examination, examination, and assessment, reducing the scoring subjects. Among them, the examination subjects include six subjects: morality and the rule of law, Chinese, mathematics, foreign languages, physics, physical education, and health, with scores presented for graduation and further education. History, geography, chemistry, and biology are taken as examination subjects, and grades are presented in grades, with grades ranging from high to low, ranging from A, B, C, and D. The assessment subjects include information technology, art, labor, and comprehensive practical activities, with scores presented as qualified/unqualified. The scores of both the examination and assessment subjects are used for graduation and for reference in further education. In addition, the written exam on ethics and the rule of law has been adjusted from closed to open, and the "experimental operations" of physics subjects are included in the middle school entrance examination scores. In this exam reform, students will be liberated from the practice of "brushing questions". The grades in the "Junior Four" subjects of history, geography, chemistry, and biology will be presented in grades, which will significantly reduce the pressure of preparing for the exam. A student said that they can finally reduce the number of questions to be answered. Li Yi, Director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, said that in recent years, there has been a situation in Beijing where the preparation stage for the high school entrance examination has been advanced in the second year of junior high school. Children have repeatedly brushed questions and memorized mechanically for the exam, resulting in excessive burden and teachers having no time to consider extracurricular practice and experimental teaching as they should. We hope that the new policy can play the role of a "baton" for exam enrollment, "guiding teachers to return from exam oriented teaching to quality teaching with more scientific evaluation, allowing children to spend more time and energy on stimulating learning interest and cultivating subject thinking, enhancing students' ability to understand the real world and solve real problems, and promoting children's physical and mental health, love to learn, and comprehensive development," said Li Yi. According to the introduction, the overall idea of this reform is to "subtract and add, multi-channel, and new carriers", reduce mechanical, repetitive, and low-level exam content and forms, strengthen the cultivation of students' interest and thinking quality, and improve the recruitment and training methods of multi-channel and new carriers, to smooth out diversified admission paths and pathways for further education. The new policy will promote the "improvement of quality and efficiency" of classrooms, which will be implemented from the date of its release and will be applicable to current eighth grade students. Several interviewed teachers stated that its impact on the classroom will soon emerge and will play a positive role in promoting innovation in teaching management and improving students' overall quality. The time that children spent brushing questions to achieve high and full scores before can now be used for experiential and immersive chemistry experiments, "said He Shanshan, a chemistry teacher at Beijing No. 171 Middle School. After the reform, chemistry teaching will return more to the subject itself, and she hopes to spend more time
