Put the "Chinese Eye" on the "Earth's Giant Eye"

2023-09-21

On September 20th, the first intermediate frequency antenna of the world's largest radio astronomical telescope array, led by China Electronics Technology Corporation, was officially hoisted at the China Electronics Technology Network Communication Research Institute in Shijiazhuang, Hebei. This is the first antenna built since the construction phase of the International Large Science Engineering Square Kilometer Array Radio Telescope Project (hereinafter referred to as "SKA"), marking China's leading and leading role in the development of SKA core equipment. SKA will provide important opportunities for humans to understand the universe and usher in a new era of human exploration. "Zheng Yuanpeng, Chief Scientist of China Electronics Technology, stated that SKA shoulders the mission of understanding the universe and the mysteries of life, and will be committed to revealing some basic issues of common concern to countries and humanity around the world, such as exploring the origin and evolution of the universe and galaxies, searching for more galaxies, exploring new cradles of life, and searching for extraterrestrial life. The "Earth's Giant Eye" project, known as the "SKA Project", began in the early 1990s and is the largest comprehensive aperture radio telescope under construction in human history. It is also an international major scientific project jointly funded and co funded by multiple countries. "Ma Yingchang, Director of the China Institute of Electronic Science Network Communications, introduced that astronomers and engineers from over a hundred universities and research institutions in about 20 countries around the world participated in the research and development of the project, The total receiving area of the radio telescope that forms the array is 1 square kilometer, equivalent to the area of 140 football fields. It is understood that SKA has stations in 8 countries, including Australia and South Africa. In the vast wilderness of about 3000 kilometers, about 3000 antennas will be constructed to form a 1 square kilometer "Earth's Giant Eye", which can quietly observe the most mysterious sounds in the depths of the universe on the Earth's surface. William Ganier, Director of the Publicity and Outreach Department of SKA Observatory, told reporters that as the largest radio telescope built in human history, SKA will become the largest scientific facility on Earth after completion, with a sensitivity 50 times higher than the current largest radio telescope array and a speed 10000 times higher. As the leading unit of the SKA Antenna Structure Work Package Alliance, China Electronics Technology Network Communication Research Institute, in collaboration with scientific and industrial institutions from South Africa, Italy, and other countries, will jointly complete the construction task of the SKA antenna structure work package antenna. The "Listening to Sound and Identifying Positions" brings together innovative crystals to accurately depict cosmic targets. In addition to the unique site conditions, it also requires accurate "Listening to Sound and Identifying Positions" - which requires high sensitivity and pointing accuracy, as well as shielding electromagnetic radiation interference from electronic devices, making antennas more focused on cosmic targets. The above requirements cannot be separated from the SKA intermediate frequency antenna that integrates multiple key technologies. Du Biao, the chief designer of the SKA intermediate frequency antenna structure project, introduced that the SKA intermediate frequency antenna has high requirements for core key indicators such as efficiency and beam deformation, pointing accuracy, electromagnetic shielding and electromagnetic compatibility, bringing unprecedented challenges to design and development. In order to meet the global technical challenges of high electromagnetic compatibility and high pointing accuracy, we have carried out research on a series of key technologies such as servo control system design, dynamic simulation, calibration, debugging, testing methods, and verification, and completed the design, processing, and integration of high electromagnetic compatibility servo control systems
