Protecting the Common Treasure of All Humanities - China's Practice of Sustainable Development of World Heritage Sites

2023-09-19

The 45th UNESCO World Heritage Conference recently passed a resolution to include China's "Pu'er Scenery and Ancient Tea Forest Cultural Landscape" in the The World Heritage List. China is a major country in world heritage, currently possessing 57 world heritage sites. The number of world natural heritage sites and natural and cultural heritage sites ranks first in the world. Since joining the Convention for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1985, China's world heritage cause has grown from scratch and is in the ascendant, striving to achieve sustainable development of world heritage and protect the common treasures of all humanity. Keeping the past: Racing against time in autumn, walking in the ancient tea forest of Jingmai Mountain is like quietly flipping through a living Chinese tea history book. This newly established World Heritage site is located in Lancang Lahu Autonomous County, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, including 5 ancient tea forests, 9 ancient villages, and 3 separated protective forests. For thousands of years, the ancient story of the coexistence of people and tea has continued here, with mountains sharing forests, forests producing tea, and tea surrounding the village. Nowadays, more than 20 local regulations and systems for the protection of ancient tea forests have been revised and improved, and measures such as cultural relic building renovation and infrastructure renovation have been carried out in heritage villages, writing a modern continuation of world heritage protection. Li Qun, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Director of the National Cutural Heritage Administration, said that the "Pu'er Scenery Maishan Ancient Tea Forest Cultural Landscape" reflects the simple ecological ethics of respecting nature and protecting mountains and forests, contains the traditional farming knowledge system of adapting measures to local conditions and green development, carries the concept of peaceful, friendly, open and inclusive multi-ethnic social governance, and vividly demonstrates the outstanding characteristics of Chinese civilization. Thousands of kilometers away, there is a group of people racing against time to protect the world heritage. In the multi field coupling laboratory of the National Center for the Protection of Ancient Murals and Earth Sites, staff are carefully recording scientific research data. With 735 caves, 45000 square meters of murals, and more than 2000 painted sculptures, the the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, built in 366 A.D., are not only a treasure of China for thousands of years, but also a witness to the exchange of diverse civilizations and the integration of multi-ethnic cultures along the ancient Silk Road. In 1987, Mogao Grottoes was listed in the The World Heritage List, which is one of the first world heritage sites in China. Material cultural heritage cannot escape the pursuit of time. How to retain the millennium glory of Dunhuang from the hands of time has always been a challenge faced by the people of Mogao Grottoes. Cliff reinforcement, sandstorm prevention and control, strict control of tourist numbers, real-time monitoring and warning of cave microenvironment, digital protection, and establishment of multiple coupled laboratories... After decades of efforts, the Mogao Grottoes have transitioned from passive rescue protection to active preventive protection, and formed a relatively complete scientific protection system. Since the implementation of the "Measures for the Protection and Management of World Cultural Heritage" in 2006, relevant protection regulations have been successively introduced in various places and heritage sites; From improving laws and regulations related to the protection of world natural heritage to implementing various key ecological projects, China has always attached great importance to the protection of world heritage. The evaluation report of the 2020 World Heritage Outlook by the World Conservation Union shows that the overall protection status of China's 18 world natural heritage sites and dual heritage sites is good, surpassing the international average. Blooming at this moment: the modern rebirth of ancient heritage. In July 2021, "Quanzhou: the World Marine Trade Center of Song and Yuan China" was listed as a "World Heritage Site
