The Path and Paradigm of Research on the History of Chinese Historiography

2023-09-14

Since Liang Qichao proposed the concept of Chinese historical history, research in this field has generally shown four paths. Liang Qichao roughly described the discipline definition and research object. Meng Wentong inherited Liang Qichao's proposition and limited the study of historical history to the category of cultural history. After learning the materialist view of history, Bai Shouyi re studied the history of Chinese historiography and clarified the new scope and tasks of the discipline. There is another group of scholars influenced by the materialist view of history, who combine historical history with historical research, supplement historical research with historical research, and use historical research to promote historical research. Liang Qichao, who values the biographies, historical records, and styles of historians, was the founder of the discipline of Chinese historiography. He proposed in the "Supplement to the Law on the Study of Chinese History" that the research object and basic content of the history of Chinese historiography include four parts: "historians, historians, the establishment and development of historiography, and recent trends in historiography". Domestic scholars follow this suggestion to sort out the research path of the development of ancient Chinese historiography. The understanding of new historiography that emerged in the Chinese historical community thereafter was based on the premise of historical evolution and respect for the social environment. For example, Jiang Tingfu pointed out in a speech that the new historiography curriculum at Tsinghua University focuses on shaping two concepts: "evolution, or origin," and "environment," which together contributed to the baptism of Darwin's theory of Chinese historiography, Tsinghua University Press, 2016 edition, page 13). Although some scholars at that time also advocated to pay attention to historical trends and social environments, the emphasis on the biographies of historians, the formation and style of historical records was still the most prominent feature of this research. Representative figures include a group of famous scholars such as Jin Yuhuan and Wei Yingqi. The research results formed on this basis are mostly systematic works titled "History of Chinese Historiography". They take demonstrating the comprehensive development of Chinese historiography as the basic framework, often emphasizing the system of historians, historical works, and officials, as the main focus of contemporary historiography. For readers who want to have a comprehensive understanding of the history of Chinese historiography, this type of research is most necessary. Early scholars had profound bibliographic skills, and when introducing historical records, they were able to reveal academic changes and examine historians to better discuss the similarities and differences of schools of thought. Readers read this book by analogy and gain far beyond history. However, such research often lacks discussion of the relationship between history and society due to the special emphasis on catalogs and historical records. As a disciplinary history, the development of Chinese historiography is relatively clear, but its position in Chinese history is not very clear. From the perspective of academic history background, some scholars pay attention to Chinese historiography as a component of Chinese academic culture, and are committed to examining the significance of historiography in academic and cultural history. The historiography in cultural history not only has the characteristics of specialized scholarship, but also fluctuates with the evolution of academic trends. In their view, history is one of the scales for observing the dynamic changes in Chinese academic culture. It exists in an environment where many cultural elements such as philosophy, literature, and thought coexist, and is an organism in a diverse state. Any change in any other element will affect the changes in history, and vice versa. Although Liang Qichao was originally
