China has mastered advanced control technology for controllable nuclear fusion with high constraints

2023-08-31

Recently, reporters learned from China National Nuclear Corporation that the new generation of artificial solar system "China Circulation 3" has made significant scientific progress, achieving high constraint mode operation under a plasma current of 1 million amperes for the first time. It has once again set a new record for the operation of magnetic confinement fusion devices in China, breaking through key technical challenges such as high current and high constraint mode operation control of plasma, injection coupling of high-power heating systems, and advanced divertor configuration control, This marks an important step towards high-performance fusion plasma operation in China's magnetic confinement fusion research. To achieve fusion energy, it is necessary to improve the comprehensive plasma parameters to the fusion ignition conditions. The high confinement mode (H-mode) in magnetic confinement fusion is a typical advanced operating mode, which has been selected as the standard operating mode for the international thermonuclear fusion test reactor (ITER) under construction. It can effectively improve the overall confinement performance of the plasma and enhance the economy of future fusion reactors. Compared with ordinary operating modes, its plasma comprehensive parameters can be improved several times. Controlled nuclear fusion has prominent advantages such as abundant resources, environmental friendliness, and inherent safety, and is currently recognized as one of the important ways to ultimately solve human energy problems. The team of the new generation artificial sun "China Circulation 3" will further develop core technologies such as high-power heating and current drive, advanced plasma operation control, etc., to achieve core level plasma operation, research cutting-edge fusion physics, and lay a solid foundation for China to carry out fusion combustion experiments and independently build fusion reactors.
