Mainland Experience Camp Ignites Hong Kong Youth's "Space Dream"

2023-08-30

Understanding the working principles of astronomical telescopes at the National Astronomical Observatory, face-to-face communication with Yang Liwei, and looking up at the starry sky at the Qinghai Mars Camp... This summer, Hong Kong high school student Chen Zhinan has gained a lot. From July 29th to August 5th, 30 Hong Kong high school students, including Chen Zhinan, went to the mainland to participate in the "Youth Space Human Experience Camp 2023" planned by the Hong Kong Space Museum. During the 8-day experience camp activity, students visited national key scientific research and astronomical facilities in Beijing, got to know the ongoing scientific research projects of the Chinese space station under the guidance of aerospace experts, and went to the Cold Lake Mars Camp in Qinghai for geological exploration on a Martian like terrain. On August 29th, the organizer held a sharing event in Hong Kong and presented them with certificates. At the Xinglong Observatory of the National Astronomical Observatory, Chen Zhinan was deeply impressed by the independently innovative design of the Guo Shoujing Telescope by national scientists. I greatly admire the researchers when I understand the working principle of telescopes. I also feel that as long as I am willing to spend time and effort, I can make breakthroughs, "she said. Another outstanding student of the experience camp, He Yujie, was deeply impressed by the introduction of the space station by aerospace experts. After listening to the lecture, I realized that the research on space stations is not only limited to physics, but also has a lot of biological and chemical content, which interests me very much. Many students said that the most unforgettable journey was at the Cold Lake Mars Camp in Qinghai, where they could see the stars with their naked eyes. Reading ten thousand books is better than traveling ten thousand miles. The knowledge gained in aerospace and astronomy in the past is from books. This time, seeing the magnificent starry sky, visiting the latest astronomical observation equipment, and communicating with experts is a rare opportunity, "said Ye Taoyuan, a student of the experience camp. The fourth batch of national reserve astronaut selection was fully launched last year, and for the first time, payload experts were selected in the Hong Kong and Macao regions. The students participating in the experience camp said that this experience camp has stimulated their enthusiasm for the aerospace industry, and they hope to have the opportunity to contribute to the development of national aerospace technology in the future. This visit not only gained an understanding of the trends in aerospace technology, but also made many like-minded good friends. I hope to choose a major related to aerospace engineering in the future to help China's aerospace industry, "said Chen Zhinan. The "Youth Space Human Body Experiment Camp" was first held in 2009 and has been successfully held for 12 times so far. This experience camp was the first to be re run after the COVID-19. More than 160 applicants signed up, and 30 middle school students were selected as "young astronauts". The experience camp is planned by the Hong Kong Space Museum, co organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, and co organized by the Beijing Hong Kong Academic Exchange Center.
