This country will hold two military exercises next month, causing tension in neighboring countries

2023-08-29

According to the website of the Russian newspaper "Independent" on August 28th, from September 1st to 6th, the "Battle Brotherhood" -2023 Joint Campaign Strategic Exercise of the Collective Security Treaty Organization troops will be held in Belarus. In addition, the Belarusian military will hold a comprehensive exercise at the end of September. Belarusian President Lukashenko has issued a special statement stating that the exercises do not pose any threat to neighboring countries. Nevertheless, Polish Foreign Minister Rau believes that Minsk is provoking "unrest" in the region, and this is not related to the existence of the Wagner Group in the country. The Belarusian Ministry of Defense has released a statement stating that "a special joint exercise is planned to be held to coordinate the training of various units of the Collective Security Organization." The statement states that within the framework of the "Battle Brotherhood" -2023 exercise, a "Mutual Collaboration" -2023 joint exercise will be held with the participation of the Collective Rapid Response Force of the Collective Security Organization. The exercise will use training grounds and areas in the Brest, Grodno, and Minsk prefectures of Belarus. It is reported that the participating troops have started moving towards Belarus. But the exercise plan for September goes beyond that. Assistant Minister of Defense of Belarus, Lievenko, wrote on the social media platform X (formerly "Twitter"): "September will be a substantial month of combat training. At the beginning of this month, a joint exercise of the 'Battle Brotherhood' of the Central Security Organization will be held. At the end of this month, a comprehensive exercise of the Belarusian military will be held. The matter regarding this exercise was previously notified to OSCE member states in accordance with the 2011 Vienna document." The Polish Foreign Minister said on this matter: Belarus and Russia are conducting military exercises. In addition, there is a statement - it is difficult to say how much has been implemented - regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus. Therefore, from this perspective, the presence of some members of the Wagner Group in Belarus does not have much impact, and the fact that the Wagner Group has left Russia will also not change anything, "the report said, Rau also accused Minsk of "opening up immigration fronts along the border with the aim of destabilizing Poland". At the same time, Lukashenko told reporters at the National University of Belarus, "To be honest, I haven't even gained a deep understanding of the details of these exercises. However, in the current situation, in order to avoid escalating tensions, the exercises do not have that kind of practical content. The participants will be small units of the security organization countries, which will mainly conduct exercises on conventional issues, tactics, and future strategies, Polish Prime Minister Moravitsky and Lithuanian President Nausada also believe that the threat from the Wagner Group may have decreased, but this will not reduce the level of regional tension.
