Local Applications of Artificial Intelligence Are Popular in Japan

ChatGPT has sparked a surging wave of artificial intelligence (AI) worldwide, and has also sparked countless waves in Japan. Compared to the competition in large model development, Japanese companies are more focused on local breakthroughs and the application of generative AI. The Japanese government recently held an "AI Strategy Conference" to discuss the rules that enterprises should follow at different stages of the development, provision, and utilization of generative AI. Japan envisions that the development phase of generative AI will mainly be undertaken by large enterprises such as OpenAI and Google in the United States, which should publicly disclose the structure and functionality of their development results to the world. Many people smell the smell of 'lying flat' from it. Japanese digital economist Jin Jianmin said that from a development perspective, generative AI can be divided into three layers: the lowest level is the General Big Model (AGI); Above it, it is a large model for industry or specific purposes; The top layer is application software (Apps), which can also be developed directly from the underlying open source language Big Model (LLM). Due to the lack of advantageous resources in developing large models in Japan, most technology companies take a detour and do not compete in the development of large models. Instead, they use basic or professional models for application development. For example, using existing large models such as ChatGPT to develop specific application solutions and solve practical problems in various fields. At present, generative AI has been rapidly applied in the most representative large enterprises in Japan. According to a survey recently released by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun Agency, only one of the 94 major companies interviewed does not intend to use generative AI. Regarding the purpose of introducing artificial intelligence, a survey shows that 83% of enterprises pursue "reducing work hours"; 67% of enterprises aim to improve production efficiency and increase sales; 63% of companies hope to reduce sales management costs and labor costs through this. Fujitsu recently announced that by collaborating with multiple companies, the company will integrate existing AI technology with generative AI and develop an AI customer service solution for retailers. Asahi Glass Company (AGC) launched the conversational artificial intelligence tool ChatAGC within the group in June. It plans to use this AI tool to read internal research data, refer to the results of this tool when developing new materials, and propose research topics and suggestions for experimental methods. Japan Electric Corporation (NEC) introduced generative AI within the company in May. Currently, the group has approximately 20000 people working in Japan using generative AI, accounting for about a quarter of all employees. The average time required to produce internal company documents has been reduced to 15 minutes, approximately half of the original time. The online meeting recording work, which originally took over an hour to organize, has been reduced to about 10 minutes. Against the backdrop of the increasingly severe aging problem of young children, Japanese companies generally hope to use generative AI to solve the problems of understaffing and low efficiency. Experts point out that timely seizing the opportunity, leveraging artificial intelligence, and promoting digital transformation are important choices related to the competitiveness of enterprises. Professor Kiko Shinai from the National Institute of Information Science in Japan stated that the convenience of generative AI cannot be restored once used. If Japanese companies do not rise up to participate in the war, the future will
