Clean shore power helps green shipping in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River

A river with clear water and green mountains on both sides, Zigui Port in Yichang City, Hubei Province is located between them. The use of clean shore power has bid farewell to the phenomenon of diesel engines roaring and many ships' oil fumes scattering in the port located at the head of the Three Gorges Dam. During previous berths, we used to use diesel generators for power supply, which not only caused loud noise and emitted a large amount of exhaust gas, but also required dedicated personnel to keep an eye on the generators to avoid tripping. "Xu Ou, the electric engineer of the" Century Mythology "cruise ship who just docked at Zigui Port, cooperated with the power workers to connect the shore power, while telling reporters that the voltage of the cruise ship was stable after using the shore power, which not only made it easier for us to work, but also greatly improved the tourist experience. Yichang is the location of the Three Gorges Project and the Gezhouba Dam Project, as well as the "throat" of the Yangtze River's golden waterway and the ecologically sensitive area of the Yangtze River Basin. Every year, a large number of passing ships stop here to wait for locks. Wang Ming, Chief Engineer of Yichang Transportation Bureau, said that there are approximately 50000 ships passing through the Three Gorges Ship Lock annually, with nearly 500 ships waiting for lock in the Three Gorges section of the Yangtze River alone. In the past, ships waiting for lockdown mainly relied on diesel generators for electricity, and there were "three highs" in electricity usage on board, namely high harmful gas emissions, high power generation costs, and high operating noise, which threatened the ecology of the Yangtze River. We also feel that there is a lot of pollution, but we still have to rely on fuel to generate electricity to maintain operation. Black smoke and roaring machines are the norm at many docks, "Xu Ou said. Ship pollution control is one of the important contents of the Yangtze River protection. How to reduce the noise and air pollution caused by burning diesel to generate electricity while facilitating the docking of ships? Clean shore power has emerged. Li Xingheng, a shore power operation and maintenance service personnel at State Grid Yichang Power Supply Company, said that Yichang began exploring shore power construction in 2015. As of the end of July this year, a total of 29.39 million kilowatt hours of clean shore power have been provided to 19000 ships, equivalent to 6900 tons of alternative fuel, reducing harmful gas emissions by 21000 tons. In response to the complex hydrological conditions and shore power demand in the Three Gorges Dam area, Yichang has also innovatively explored six typical shore power supply systems to meet the shore power usage needs of different docking methods and ships. At present, shore power has covered 67 terminals in the Yichang River section, and a total of 168 sets of shore power facilities have been built to meet different needs, with a shore power supply capacity of 27000 kVA. Clean shore power helps green shipping in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, and the port gradually bid farewell to the "diesel flavor", ushering in a win-win situation for all parties. The captain of the "Athena" cruise ship, Lv Biyun, calculated that the "Athena" cruise ship usually arrives at Zigui Port around 1am and connects to shore power. At 9pm, passengers return to Fengdu, Chongqing. During this period, using shore power saved about 7000 yuan compared to burning diesel to generate electricity before, and more importantly, it reduced pollution to the Yangtze River. The environment in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area has improved, and the quality of tourism has also significantly improved. Since the beginning of this year, the Three Gorges tourism has been hot, and the electricity consumption on shore has also been continuously increasing. Li Xingheng said that in the first seven months of this year, a total of 6.27 million kilowatt hours of shore electricity were provided to 7387 ships, of which the electricity consumption on shore electricity in July reached 1.78 million kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 49.1%, setting a new high for shore electricity consumption in a single month. According to reporters, the shore power utilization rate of cruise ships berthing in Yichang has reached 100%. The utilization rate of shore power at freight terminals is also steadily increasing, and cargo
