More than 150 million overseas users of Chinese online literature

2023-06-02

The reporter learned from the "2023 China International Online Literature Week" hosted by the Chinese Writers Association, Zhejiang Provincial People's Government, and Hangzhou Municipal People's Government in Hangzhou that as of the end of 2022, the overseas market size of Chinese online literature exceeded 3 billion yuan, with a total output of over 16000 online works and over 150 million overseas users, covering more than 200 countries and regions around the world. According to the "Report on the Spread and Development of Chinese Online Literature in Asia" released by the Chinese Writers Association, Asia is the region where Chinese online literature is most widely spread overseas. In 2022, Chinese online literature has over 100 million overseas users and a market size of 1.6 billion yuan in the Asian region. It is mainly disseminated through five methods: physical book publishing, online translation, IP conversion, establishing a local ecosystem, and investing in the market. Hu Huijuan, Vice President of Beijing Jinjiang Original Network Technology Co., Ltd., believes that the dissemination of Chinese online literature overseas has enhanced the understanding and interest of overseas readers in Chinese culture, which is conducive to its further dissemination overseas. It is worth mentioning that in 2022, 16 Chinese online literature works such as "My Son-in-law", "Great Heavy Industry", and "Da Yi Ling Ran" were included in the Chinese collection of the British Library, and the influence of Chinese online literature overseas is increasingly increasing. The passionate struggle of youth, the warmth of watching and helping each other... Chinese online writers have successfully turned 'my story' into 'our story'. "Ye Tong, Secretary of the Party Group and Vice Chairman of the Zhejiang Writers' Association, interprets the 'circle fans' of Chinese online literature overseas. Industry insiders point out that the current Chinese online literature works that are "going abroad" still face problems such as a single type of theme, a lack of literary "internal skills", insufficient translation ability, difficulties in overseas rights protection, incomplete dissemination mechanisms, and uneven market coverage, which urgently need improvement and strengthening.
