June 1 this year is the first anniversary of the implementation of the Wetland Protection Law of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the Wetland Protection Law), and this year is also the 31 anniversary of China's accession to the Wetland Convention. In order to strengthen the promotion of the rule of law in wetland protection and consolidate the strong consensus of the whole society to cherish and protect wetlands, today, the Supreme People's Court has released twelve typical cases of wetland ecological protection, fully demonstrating the effectiveness of the People's Court's wetland ecological protection. Wetlands are important natural ecosystems and an important foundation for maintaining national ecological security. On December 24, 2021, the 32nd meeting of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress voted to pass the Wetland Protection Law, which will come into effect on June 1, 2022. The Wetland Protection Law is an important achievement in the construction of ecological civilization and the rule of law in China. It is the first time that China has specifically legislated for the protection of wetland ecosystems, and also a landmark legislation for China's wetland protection work to fully enter the track of rule of law. It provides strong legal protection for the judicial protection of wetland ecological environment. Use the power of justice to escort wetland protection and restoration work, and promote the high-quality development of wetland protection in China. The twelve typical cases of wetland ecological protection topics released this time include different types of litigation such as criminal, civil, administrative, and public interest litigation for environmental resources; It involves the protection of precious and endangered wild animals and plants, the prevention and control of alien invasive species, the protection of mudflat in major rivers and lakes and key lakes and rivers; The scope of protection covers Xingkai Lake Wetland in Heilongjiang Province, Yancheng Coastal mudflat Wetland in Jiangsu Province, Sancha River Wetland in Anhui Province, Dongjiang Lake Wetland in Hunan Province, Yangtze River Estuary mudflat Wetland in Shanghai, Hangzhou Bay Wetland in Zhejiang Province, Quanzhou Bay Estuary Wetland in Fujian Province, Haizhu Wetland in Guangdong Province and other wetland reserves that have important influence in China and even the world. The precious and endangered wildlife under key protection and well-known to the public in the above-mentioned wetlands include dozens of species, including the red crowned crane, elk, Chinese white dolphin, Chinese sturgeon, white sturgeon, Oriental white stork, white headed crane, white tailed sea eagle, golden eagle, and tiger headed sea eagle. The precious and endangered plant species under key protection are also countless, breeding an exceptionally rich biodiversity resource. It is reported that these twelve typical cases of wetland ecological protection have been properly tried in accordance with the law, fully demonstrating the unremitting efforts of the people's courts to play the role of environmental resource adjudication, protect the ecological security boundaries of wetlands in accordance with the law, and leave beautiful wetlands for future generations. This has a demonstrative and leading role in further strengthening wetland legal protection, and is also a concrete action taken by China to fully fulfill the Wetland Convention, highlighting China's great achievements
